Job Description

Under general direction, the Digital Communications Specialist supports the communication functions of the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions and its four schools. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating and deploying high-impact social media, email, web and digital-screen content aimed at elevating awareness, building trust, driving enrollment outcomes, managing reputation and strategically enhancing online presence. A successful candidate for this position is a creative communicator skilled in digital marketing and social media strategy concepts, with excellent customer service instincts and a talent for copywriting, graphic design and video editing.

Essential Duties

  • Helps develop and execute social media, email marketing and web content strategies.
  • Helps develop and maintain social media and website content calendars.
  • Develops brand-specific, strategic content for targeted distribution over the Watts College social media channels, and oversees content created and distributed by student workers in the college, School of Community Resources and Development, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, School of Public Affairs and School of Social Work.
  • Analyzes social media, email and web content performance and determines how to improve effectiveness.
  • Contributes to the development and execution of social media advertising strategies.
  • Attends events to conduct real-time social media promotion.
  • Assists with capturing video/audio/photographic content as needed (personally or w/ a vendor).
  • Writes brand-specific content for electronic communications, website, newsletters, printed materials, fliers, brochures and video scripts related to the mission and purpose of the college and its four schools.
  • Produces newsletters and customer journeys in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, including writing, editing, formatting and dissemination.
  • Analyzes and tracks communications and determines how to improve effectiveness.
  • Engages with college leadership, marketing team members, faculty and staff to source content.
  • Helps facilitate transcription and storage of digital assets as needed.
  • Researches trends and innovations in digital marketing.
  • Maintains and adheres to brand voice and tone.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and two (2) years of related experience: OR, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.  Demonstrated experience in writing and editing online content.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in developing effective social media campaigns.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Google Analytics, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Hootsuite, Canva, Photoshop, InDesign and video editing software.
  • Experience working in a higher education and/or executive environment.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
