Digital and Interactive Adult Programs Instructor, CE

The mission of Rhode Island School of Design Continuing Education (RISD|CE) is to educate students of all ages in art and design with high quality, accessible programs. We offer hundreds of non-credit RISD|CE courses, workshops and lectures, in all aspects of art and design, for adults, teens and children year-round. RISD|CE's fall and spring terms offer 12-week and six-week courses, while winter and summer terms offer six-week courses. In the summer, RISD Continuing Education also offers the six-week Pre-College Program for high school artists and designers, and a range of Summer Programs for college credit: Summer Studies six-week courses in visual arts and design; the Textiles Summer Institute; and the Summer Institute for Graphic Design Studies. RISD|CE also offers non-credit certificate programs for adults and teens.

Essential Functions

  • Be prepared to develop culturally diverse syllabi for digital and interactive courses.
  • Lead classes and critiques that model constructive, inclusive discussions and that encourage students to grow creatively and intellectually.
  • This instructor role is responsible for planning, organizing, teaching, and providing feedback to promote and direct student learning in keeping with RISD CE's learning-centered values and in a manner that meets the essential competencies of an artist.
  • The instructor must respond to students in a timely manner.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Commitment to teaching and engagement in a rigorous digital art and design program.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement diverse teaching and learning for different learning styles and to respond to the needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds and abilities in a multicultural environment.
  • Administratively proficient, allowing for timely responses and submissions of required information and materials, meeting administrative deadlines, with strong computer literacy.
  • Ability to accept and act upon constructive feedback from course and classroom evaluations by students and staff.
  • Teaching is for Westerly location, travel to Westerly off-campus location a must.
  • Skilled with popular desktop software and online platforms (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, CAD, Rhino, Revit, After Effects, etc.).
  • Teaching experience required.

Valued but not required skills and experience :

  • Teaching experience in a collegiate setting that addresses underrepresented communities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of adult learning principles and respect for students as well as a genuine interest in their learning.
  • Track record of producing graduates whose digital competencies grew to the point of applying them to develop interactive websites, dynamic advertising, e-marketing materials, mobile and multimedia applications, educational/training course modules, etc.
  • Track record of paid professional experience at companies successfully doing related work, and/or a robust, creative, intellectually and critically engaged digital/interactive design or studio practice, as evidenced by recognition in publications, commissions, exhibitions, awards and/or collaborative projects.
  • Knowledge of ability to develop and commitment to use emerging technologies and alternative delivery methods appropriately, including online delivery, hybrid course options, etc.

Work Schedule: Evenings and weekends only, contracted basis at our Westerly location.

Employment Status : Temporary: Contract per class, reviewed on a semesterly basis.
