Job Description

The Development Officer will join a team that works collaboratively to advance development initiatives at the ASU Art Museum with the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. With a primary focus on donor relations and individual giving, the Development Officer will build a pipeline of gifts and ensure best practices for donor stewardship. The Development Officer will act as a liaison to external and internal constituencies including donors, foundations, corporations, members, alumni, funding agencies, ASU Foundation, Herberger Institute and other partner organizations. This will require a professional who can envision new partnerships and engage new audiences, set and exceed goals and expectations, initiate and grow authentic relationships, all while raising more unrestricted support, restricted support for key initiatives and endowed funds that will build a strong foundation for the Museum’s growth. 

This position is on site at the Tempe Campus and will be scheduled regular business hours  (8am-5pm/M-F); with the ability to work flexible shifts to support events, students and faculty when needed.

Essential Duties

  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the Museum’s strategic plan, mission, vision as well as the permanent collection, special exhibitions and public programs in order to effectively articulate our priorities and fundraising objectives to donors and prospects 
  • Identify, cultivate and successfully solicit major gifts from a diverse group of individuals, corporations and other sources. Ensure high-quality and appropriate stewardship of donors at all gift levels. 
  • Increase philanthropy at all levels and develop effective strategies for inspiring new levels of support, retaining existing supporters, and creating stimulating benefits and programming. 
  • Develop, organize and implement strategies, proposals, presentations, and one-on-one gift solicitation to attract and retain special event sponsorship support. 
  • Manage Director-level stewardship of donors including acknowledgements, updates on internal and external materials. 
  • Oversee grant strategies including researching, writing and monitoring grant proposals, grant calendar, case statements and reports for potential funding sources (private and government) 
  • Identify and solicit support through personal meetings and written appeals.  
  • Coordinate with ASU Foundation and Herberger institute on fundraising strategies, proposals, gift and endowment agreements. 
  • Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate comprehensive donor relations programs and events. 
  • Work closely with Herberger Institute and other departments to ensure donors and prospects benefit from the best opportunities the Museum has to offer 
  • Use the ASU Foundation donor system Salesforce to research, input, extract and analyze prospect and donor information 
  • Manage the Museum’s gift recording and reporting systems to ensure timely and accurate accounting and recognition of gifts in accordance with ASU guidelines. 
  • Work with Creative Impact Board, Directors Council, Innovation Council and support groups  to set fundraising priorities, identify opportunities for support and engagement, and attract new donors. 
  • Perform general development administrative tasks related to assigned development program components 
  • Create, manage and monitor an annual development program budget and track progress through monthly and annual reports in regular communication with Finance and Director’s Departments 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND three years successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in higher education; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a background in contemporary art and/or art history to facilitate sophisticated conversations with donors and prospects 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and techniques of development/fundraising, preferably in higher education 
  • Evidence of a strategic and detailed planner who understands the role of philanthropy in a higher education environment 
  • Evidence of a collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment   
  • Experience in maintaining a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information 
  • Evidence of collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone 
  • Experience in working both independently and as part of a team  
  • Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible   
  • Evidence in being a team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies 
  • Experience in developing and maintaining solid and effective working relationships with internal and external constituents 
  • Evidence in an advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University  
  • Experience in work that requires organization and be able to handle multiple projects  
  • Experience in navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans 
  • Experience in planning and directing fundraising activities and events 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Power Point) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with ASU’s donor database, Salesforce. And other ASU & Museum systems including PeopleSoft & Workday 

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolutions of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to computer workstation / laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, copier, and telephone.
