Summary of Duties:

The William D. Ruckelshaus Center’s (Center) mission is to act as an impartial resource for collaborative problem solving in the State of Washington and Pacific Northwest. The Center is a joint effort of Washington State University and the University of Washington (UW). The Center is hosted at the University of Washington by the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Policy and Governance and at Washington State University by WSU Extension (which also provides its administration). The Center is guided by an advisory board of prominent local, state, and regional leaders representing a broad range of constituencies and geographic locations. The Director of Development (DoD) is responsible for the development and implementation of fundraising activities to meet the mission of the Ruckelshaus Center. The DoD will manage a portfolio of donors, secure major gift pledges and, in collaboration with the Center Director and Development Committee, create annual fundraising strategies and set goals.
 

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, major gift cultivation, developing and implementing a legacy campaign, solicitation and stewardship; development and execution of an annual giving program; management of special events in support of philanthropic activities; development of outreach materials such as newsletters, collateral and digital content; as well as maintenance of communication platforms such as Twitter and the Center’s website.
 

The DoD will liaise closely with Advancement colleagues throughout the WSU and UW systems, specifically the CAHRNS Development and the WSU Foundation team, and coordinate efforts with other Ruckelshaus team members as well as the Center’s Advisory Board. They will be expected to be a self-starter, evaluating strategy and processes, and reporting on their findings not only to the Center Director and Advisory Board, but to the William D. Ruckelshaus Foundation, a separate 501C3, whose mission it is to raise funds for the Ruckelshaus Center.
Position is located in Washington State preferably, Pullman or Seattle.
 

Occasional travel within Washington state and work in the evenings and on weekends is required.
A fundraising goal of between $750,000 and $1,500,000 will be established for this position.


Required Qualifications:


Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which includes two (2) years of full-time fundraising experience, demonstrated success in proposal writing and submission, evidence of ability to plan and execute a fund drive (i.e. responsibility for a project from conception to realization), demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitations of gifts of $50,000 or more, OR comparable experience.

  • Comparable experience includes progressively responsible full-time consultative sales in real estate, industrial equipment, vehicles, custom services, or bulk commodities, which include long term relationships between salespeople and clients, which includes negotiating the terms and conditions of individual sales with customers, program oversight and management, clearly defined goals and objectives, and a demonstrated track record of sales success.

  • A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience demonstrating strong interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining internal and external relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate, develop and steward client/donor relationships.

  • Understanding of proposal development and writing, fundraising and/or client development principles and techniques; project management skills; and familiarity with event planning/management.

  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively orally and in writing and organize and execute assignments.

  • A valid driver’s license at time of hire.

  • Proficient with the use of a computer and various computer programs and software packages, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Salesforce, Website content management systems (such as WordPress), FileMaker Pro, MS Access, Business Contact Manager, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and browsing applications, and CRM.

  • Demonstrated experience in development at a university.

  • Demonstrated success in creating effective electronic and printed communications material.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently and as part of a collaborative team work effectively and professionally with diverse populations.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; deal with complex situations professionally; understand the priorities of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and arrange job assignments, and independently meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks; effectively organize and prioritize; and keep accurate records, and complete timely reports.

  • Effective personal interaction skills with prospects, donors, faculty, staff, development officers and administration; ability to build strong relationships with donors, board members, and the community.
