What You Will Do

The activities and focus of this Group ensure the manufacturing of detonator products in support of the nation’s nuclear deterrent, and homeland security needs.  The High Explosive Detonator Fabrication Group, DET-1 holds the responsibility for manufacturing and surveillance of war reserve (WR) detonators. The group is responsible for numerous high explosive manufacturing processes.


The successful candidate will need to collaborate with several other technical organizations within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP) to include the Production Agency Quality Division (PAQ) to achieve its goals and deliverables.  This position will report directly to the Group Leader of DET-1. 


The successful candidate(s) will perform the following duties in this position:

  • Develop inspection processes and strategies

  • Program Coordinate Measurement Machines and other automated inspection equipment using proprietary programming languages

  • Perform Inspection operations using of Coordinate Measuring Machines, optical systems, rotary gages, hard gages and other open setup equipment

  • Perform complex set up, alignments, maintenance, operations, and/or calibration of conventional inspection tools and/or equipment

  • Participate in continuous improvement activities to create and sustain a learning environment

  • Act as lead and participate in the review of activities of other staff

  • Perform all evolutions within the conduct-of-operations environment of either a high-explosive or nuclear-operations facility

  • Provide technical direction to less experienced QC inspection/test personnel

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced demonstrated experience in metrology and inspections operations.

  • Expert experience performing complex set up, alignments, maintenance, operations, and/or calibration of conventional inspection tools and/or equipment.

  • High-Level knowledge of and demonstrated experience in GD&T technical principles, theories, and concepts using and interpreting engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications, and related data to assist in the evaluation of design factors, and conducting operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment.

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience developing and implementing procedures and work instructions.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques and production operations.

  • Advanced level experience in researching, specifying, and selecting measurement and test equipment.

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience utilizing various metrology software packages such as Quindos, Calypso and/or PC-DMIS; CAD software packages such as Pro/E, SOLIDWORKS, or AutoCAD; and spreadsheet packages such as Excel.

  • Eight (8) years of directly-relevant quality inspection experience.

Desired Skills:

  • Expert-level inspection experience using hard gages and other open set-up equipment.

  • Certified Quality Inspector from an accredited organization such as the American Society of Quality (ASQ)." 

  • "Certification in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) from an accredited organization such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)."

  • Experience with operations, safety requirements, and/or experience working under the DOE Order 440.1B, High Explosives Safety Manual, or alternate experience working in a nuclear facility under DOE Order 422.1, Conduct of Operations.

  • Advanced experience in programming CMMs, optical and/or vision systems for part inspection using metrology software packages such as Quindos, Calypso, PC-DMIS, or other related software.

  • Experience and/or formal training in improving organizational processes and creating a culture of continuous improvement using Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and other methodologies/tools.

  • Certified Quality Inspector.

  • Active DOE Q Clearance

Education: High School diploma (or GED) Plus 10 years of related experience. Technical institute graduation or AA degree preferred. Alternatively, the education requirement can be met with a four year degree and five (5) years of relevant work experience


Work Environment:  Work near electrical power supplies, work with sources of ionizing radiation or explosives, work near machinery with moving parts, safety glasses or eye protection, gloves or hand protection, toxic and irritant chemicals.
