Department Description

The mission of Information and Educational Technology (IET) is to create and support an information technology environment that enhances the ability of the UC Davis community to teach, do research and provide public service. The Desktop Services team within IET Operations, provides desktop support and engineering for IET and campus clients. The Desktop Engineer is viewed as an experienced technical analyst who provides advanced workstation support, system administration, and network administration to IET and campus clients, for both staff and faculty. Working closely with AggieDesktop as a representative of IET, this position contributes to the overall desktop initiatives of the campus.

Job Summary

Under direction of the IET Desktop Services (IETDS) Supervisor, the Desktop Engineer provides second and third-tier computer workstation and IT service support via telephone, email, remote administration tools, and onsite visits to customer premises. Research, propose, and implement automated support solutions for desktop and laptop computer hardware and peripherals, operating systems, application software, and IT services. Assist in the management of Windows and Mac client workstations. Plan, build, initialize, and update workstations as new releases, upgrades, and patches, become available and approved while following documented procedures. Install and configure standard operating systems, software applications, anti-malware, and remote administration tools. Configure workstations to match department or unit specific configurations and to comply with campus security policies. Assist the workgroup, unit, or department with special projects. Work on short- long-term assignments within the division.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Hire MUST be located in-state. (Out of state applicants will be considered but must relocate instate if hired). This position is hybrid, required to work on-site 4 days each week, 1 day remote.
  • Due to the mission-critical services provided by this department, this position may work hours other than M-F 8-5, especially in response to system problems. Shift reassignments may occur to meet operational needs. Vacation is restricted during peak work periods. May occasionally be on-call as required and carry a cell phone. 
  • Work in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. 
  • Travel between campus and off-campus locations. 
  • Valid CA driver’s license; participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. 
  • Adhere to workplace safety practices, read, information communicated about workplace safety, complete required safety training on time, and report any workplace safety issues promptly to their supervisor or the designated safety coordinator. Work with clients via telephone for extended periods of time.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience in independently researching, planning, testing, documenting, and resolving incidents and problems.
  • Experience and skills supporting and maintaining PC and Mac hardware, operating systems, and related software applications including creating and deploying software installation packages.
  • Experience and skills supporting Windows 11/10/8/7, and Mac OS 13/12/11/10.x operating systems.
  • Experience and skills supporting Microsoft Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, and Microsoft Exchange.
  • Experience and skills supporting physical and logical disk management, data encryption, printer and other device drivers, peripheral connection technologies, email client applications, web browsers, and software programs.
  • Experience assimilating technical concepts, terms, and materials, and explaining this material to non-technical clients.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience communicating with multiple levels of an organization.
  • Experience to provide technical support for the campus’s on-premises and cloud email and calendaring services.
  • Experience developing and applying creative and innovative concepts to problem resolution.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment to provide technical support and consulting services to clients.
  • Experience to deploy, maintain, support workstations, and monitor hardware and software assets using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, Windows Deployment Services, BigFix and or JAMF.
  • Experience in troubleshooting network connections both wired/wireless and VPN clients.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of the Incident Management, Problem Management, and Service Request Fulfillment concepts of ITIL V4.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft PowerShell.
