The Structural Materials (SM) Division in the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking motivated and highly technical staff to design/fabricate custom mechanical testing instruments and unique fixtures, perform existing equipment modifications, equipment repair, manipulators, and other sample jigs. This ultimately will require the use of a diverse set of materials for the various solutions above. This material list may include but are not limited to: Stainless Steel, Copper, Aluminum, thermoplastics, composites, Titanium, and super alloys.
Responsible for the daily operations of a machining center that include the following:
• Machine tooling selection and inventory for a wide variety of metals and non-metals machining.
• Tooling and Machine maintenance.
• Metal and component stock inventory and supply.
• Selection, supply and use of a variety of metal working fluids.
• Safety training of all personnel using the facility
• Maintain a safe, clean, working area.
• Ensure lathes and milling machines are in correct alignment for precision machining.

Minimum Qualifications:

T2 Minimum Qualifications
• High school graduation or its equivalent.
• 3 years of related technical experience. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.
• Manual precision machining experience using Lathes, mills, bandsaws, surface grinders (at least 1 year minimum experience).
• Able to collaborate with researchers and engineers to create novel solutions to unique, critical challenges.
• Experience working in a laboratory environment.
• Able to work on multiple projects.
• Proficient in Solidworks or other equivalent CAD software.
• Familiar with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
• Safely use a wide variety of hand tools including grinders, saws, drills, shears and torches.
• Ability to understand and interpret basic mechanical drawings.
• Able to work independently.
• Problem solving skills.
• Able to lift and maneuver a variety of machining attachments and metal stock. (75lbs. max).
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Confidential Level clearance.
• Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen.

T3 Minimum Qualifications
• Must meet the T2 qualifications.
• 8 years of related technical experience. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.

T4 Minimum Qualifications
• Must meet the T3 qualifications.
• 12 years of related technical experience. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.

T5 Minimum Qualifications
• Must meet the T4 qualifications.
• 15 years of related technical experience. Formal technical training beyond high school can be substituted for two years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Associate of Science Degree in an Engineering Discipline.
• TIG welding experience.
• CNC programming/operating experience.
