JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


We are seeking a Research and Development Engineer with expertise in finite element analysis (FEA) to join our team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. This role will involve designing, analyzing, and testing structures and systems, with a particular emphasis on multi-material assemblies, including fiber-reinforced polymer composite structures. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with our research and development team to conceptualize solutions and present analytical results to program sponsors. ARL at Penn State University is dedicated to developing innovative solutions to complex national problems, with a primary focus on supporting the U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, and Intel communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize CAD and other engineering tools to create and model mechanical designs.
  • Conduct FEA of designs at both the system and subsystem levels.
  • Implement MATLAB and Python scripting to enhance process quality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers to develop innovative solutions.
  • Present analytical results in the form of presentations or reports, often directly to program sponsors
  • Develop test methods for design verification, oversee fabrication of test hardware and fixtures, and participate in testing activities.

Additional Responsibilities for Higher Level Position:

  • Interact with sponsors through formal presentations and reporting.
  • Lead projects as a task lead or Principal Investigator (PI).

This position can be filled at multiple levels depending on education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or science discipline and 2 years' related experience. Additional education and/or experience required for higher level positions. A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • FEA modeling and analysis
  • Solid modeling CAD software
  • Programming using MATLAB or Python or similar
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, lead a team, and work independently

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Abaqus, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Composite materials and underwater systems.
  • Familiarity with fatigue or lifecycle assessment methodologies.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$86,300.00 - $191,000.00
