Job Summary
PLEASE NOTE: This will be an international position, based in Mumbai, India, and employed by Harvard Global Research Support Center, India -- an affiliate of Harvard University or by another affiliate of Harvard University.
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (SPH), a global leader in public health research and education, is looking for a Deputy Director to oversee the research and administrative work at its India Research Center (IRC). The overarching mission of the the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is to improve the public's health through learning, discovery, and communication. The India Research Center, an office of Harvard Global Research Support Centre India, opened in December 2015 through the generous support of donors. The Center is designed to facilitate the development of new strategic relationships and build upon existing ones with organizations across India. The Center provides logistical support for its strategic goals of research, teaching, and knowledge translation and communication already underway by the School’s faculty and students and their collaborators in India.
The Deputy Director will work closely with the Faculty Director of the Center on the research, training, and communications operations of the Center and will oversee the administration and operations of the IRC's work in India.
Job-Specific Responsibilities
Reporting to the IRC Faculty Director, the Deputy Director will oversee the administration and operations of the IRC's work in India, work closely with the Faculty Director in the implementation of the strategic plan for the Harvard India Research Center, and collaborate closely with the faculty director and staff at both the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Global Services, Inc. to develop and oversee robust operational policies and procedures for the Center.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- In collaboration with the Faculty Director, develop implementation priorities and schedules for the Center’s strategic plan that outlines the mission and goals for Harvard Chan's public health programing in India
- Conceptualize, organize, and oversee training workshops in collaboration with Harvard Chan IRC Director and faculty.
- Develop operational plans for all aspects of the financial and administrative management of the Center in collaboration with the Faculty Director, Harvard Global Support Services, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
- Liaise with and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships, and facilitate communications with and between Harvard affiliated offices and centers and partners in India
- Develop staffing plans and monitor them for compliance with Center goals
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and provide feedback to staff
- Oversee the India-based fiscal and administrative activites of Center’s projects and initiatives
- Serve as a key liaison between the Faculty Director and members of the Advisory Council of IRC
- As needed, interact with local media to advocate for the Harvard Chan IRC
- Work with the Faculty Director and the SPH Office of External Relations to develop outreach, donor relations, stakeholder management, and fund raising strategies for key partners in India
- Develop protocols and manage the logistical support for field visits of visiting faculty and students
- Coordinate with staff and grant managers at HSPH on protocols for and administration of proposal submissions, invoice approval, and monitoring of trial balance for IRC related gifts and grants
- Provide operational support for administrative functions, including the audit and tax requirements, of the IRC in conjunction with Harvard Global Support Services and SPH through which the IRC operates
- Contribute substantively to the development and writing of grant applications
- Other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: This position will require regular evening work to coordinate with US-based operations. It will also require travel within India, when normal business operations resume, and may require occasional travel to Harvard's Boston offices.
PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Mumbai, India. Until our return to the office, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, onsite work in Mumbai will be required as a condition of continued employment once the Center and this role return to an operational status that supports it.
Basic Qualifications
- Master's degree in management, public health, or social science required
- 7+ years of related experience required
- Prior supervisory experience required
Additional Qualifications and Skills
The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
- 7+ years of management experience, particularly in the non-profit sector, strongly preferred
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, financial modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills that are adaptable to multiple audiences
- Knowledge of health and public health in non-profit or for profit sectors
- Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based difference within group environments
- Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Skills related to creating and supporting an environment that allows for inclusion, effective intercultural engagement, and personal humility and authenticity
- Experience fostering and reinforcing an environment that values unique experiences, cultures, backgrounds, and goals
