Position Announcement

The Deputy Athletic Director serves as the chief operating officer for the Department of Athletics, with responsibility and accountability for effective day-to-day operations, programming and administration of key department functions, including external operations, advancement, financial and budget management, personnel supervision and management, communications, and contract negotiations. The Deputy Athletic Director will work closely with the Director of Athletics to build a strong, positive athletics program and encourage support for the University among a broad range of internal and external stakeholders. Key stakeholders include donors, student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, alumni, students, parents, the media, business and community leaders, and other supporters of Utah Valley University. The Deputy Athletic Director will innovatively operate as an advisor and liaison to the Director of Athletics while effectively managing the everyday processes of a vibrant and burgeoning NCAA DI athletic department. Additional responsibilities include oversight of assigned sport programs and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.


Summary of Responsibilities

  • Assists the Athletic Director with fundraising, corporate partnerships, major events, media relations, etc. of the UVU Athletic program.
  • Maintains an organization structure and staffing to effectively accomplish UVU Athletic goals and objectives; oversee recruitment, training, supervision, professional development and evaluation of staff. Serves as the Administrator for designated sport programs/head coaches as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • Ensures that appropriate programs, policies, and resources are in place to provide for student-athlete success and a positive student-athlete experience consistent with an NCAA Division I institution, WAC, Big 12 and UVU policies and procedures.
  • Represent UVU Athletics through various leadership positions in a highly professional manner institutionally, in the community, at the Conference level (WAC/Big 12), and within the NCAA, including reporting, committee participation, championship event hosting, and sport and seminar travel.

  • Responsibly administer annual budgets and seek additional resources for UVU Athletics. Perform periodic cost and productivity analyses; monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness and effect changes required for improvement.
  • Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the university, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations. Attend the majority of all athletic events/games and functions due to the explicit nature of fundraising and the need to meet the great constituency where face-to-face interaction is necessary for success.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.


Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Bachelor's degree in a related field plus four years of experience related to the summary of duties OR a combination of education and relevant experience totaling 10 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master degree in a related field and seven years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities; or bachelor degree in a related field and eight years of experience  related to the duties and responsibilities.


Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Knowledge    

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics and resource development strategies.
  • Knowledge of public relations and management principles and practices. 
  • Knowledge of financial/business/budgeting analysis techniques, and recruiting practices and hiring policies and procedures. 
  • Knowledge and ability to uphold regulations governing intercollegiate athletics as set forth by the NCAA, WAC and BIG12. 
  • Knowledge of technical writing procedures, philanthropic gift solicitation, revenue generation, marketing and branding practices, budgeting and fiscal management. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 
  • Knowledge of market research and sales forecasting principles and methodologies.

  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
