What You Will Do

Reporting to the Safe-DS Group Leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Deployed Security Specialist II will work with organizations to implement Integrated Safeguards and Security standards in order to achieve a healthy security culture and prevent threats to nuclear and classified assets. You will work with individuals and in group settings to build trust and strengthen relationships between the organizations you support and the Laboratory’s Defense Security Program. In your role as a trusted member of the Laboratory’s Security Team, you will engage on issues related to all aspects of security to include: Information Protection, Physical Security, Personnel Security, Incidents of Security Concern, Materials Control and Accountability, Vulnerability Analysis and Access Control. You will work closely with your supported organizations to assist with security related incidents and ensure effective communication with management. You will produce written documents to describe plans and record events. You will be the primary point of contact for your supported groups and all things security related, while having the opportunity to shape and define security at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • General knowledge of one or more of the following: personnel security, access control, classified matter protection and control, or physical security.

  • Ability to coordinate efforts and collaborate with a variety of individuals with differing opinions.

  • Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple activities to meet customer deadlines.

  • Ability to make appropriate job decisions following standard office policies, provide appropriate solutions, and follow up to ensure resolution.

  • Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to work effectively with management and peers.

  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations or written documents that explain complex issues in a concise manner to a diverse audience.

Desired Skills:

  • A demonstrable Security Mindset.

  • Experience handling classified documents.

  • Active Q clearance.

  • Working knowledge of Lab-wide administrative systems (Oracle, Time and Labor, Concur) and computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.).

Education Required: Position typically requires a Bachelor’s in business, management, or security-related field and a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • As a deployed security specialist, the selected candidate may be subject to movement within the organizations to meet customer organization’s security needs.  Assignments may overlap into other laboratory organizations as specialized or significant issues arise.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.


*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
