Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Economics is within the College of Arts and Sciences. It confers BA, BS, MA and PhD degrees in Economics and a minor in Entrepreneurship. The department currently has a full-time faculty of 35 and an enrollment of about 1,250 undergraduate majors and 75 doctoral students. The primary purpose of the Department of Economics is to provide excellent education, research, and service in the field. This goal breaks down into four important components: 1) to teach economics to undergraduates in a manner that will introduce them vigorously to its broad scope; 2) to offer scientific and professional training to graduate students to prepare them for teaching and research careers in the fields of econometrics, economic history, financial econometrics health economics, international trade and development, labor economics, microeconomics theory/industrial organization, and monetary and open economy macroeconomics; 3) to carry out cutting-edge research in these areas to be published in professional journals; 4) to provide consulting and administrative support services to the economics profession as well as to the university, the community, the states, the region and the nation.
Position Summary
The Business Officer (BO) reports directly to the Chair. This position is responsible for management and coordination of all administrative operations of a large complex social science department within the College of Arts and Sciences. The BO is to function independently in carrying out departmental responsibilities. The position supports and advises the faculty, EHRA (Exempt from State Human Resources Act) Non-Faculty, and instructors, while managing an administrative staff of five full-time SHRA employees.
The BO is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Department of Economics. Specific duties include administrative responsibility for financial management; personnel management and supervision; program policy/planning and development, department governance and facilities management.
The BO meets the diverse demands generated by the faculty’s research programs, external professional commitments, and involvement in teaching and governing within the broader University. In support of departmental functions and faculty activities in all these areas, the BO deploys staff, manages all the available physical and budgetary resources, provides advice and guidance, and serves a liaison and facilitator. Duties also include management of the Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Mid- to late-career with Masters and 2- 4 yrs experience; Bachelors and 3-5 yrs experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office software with demonstrated proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook. He/she must possess strong oral and written communication skills, as well the ability to independently prioritize work to meet deadlines. Experience working with financial statements and grants administration in addition to development and control budgets is essential. Candidate should demonstrate past professional experience that shows sound judgment, management, problem-solving and analytical skills and the ability to work as an effective leader and team member. In addition, a demonstrated ability to interact with faculty, staff, students and other University personnel and others outside of the University is also required. The selected candidate must also possess analytical and reasoning skills in order to evaluate policies and regulations at the university, state and federal levels. Supervisory experience is also essential.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Familiarity with processing visas, working with PeopleSoft, InfoPorte, RAMSES and Adobe PDF documents are plus. Knowledge of and experience with University accounting systems, EHRA and SHRA policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines for contracts and grant awards is also highly preferred.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
