Job Description
The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) seeks a productive individual to join our team as a Department HR Specialist. This position will manage and perform work of considerable responsibility in administering human resource functions in a complex academic unit with significant research and instructional emphasis. The successful candidate must be skilled in maintaining effective working relationships among a diverse population, skilled in handling confidential and sensitive information, and work effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities. This position requires knowledge of electronic data processing and applications as it applies to human resources, knowledge of academic and university policies and procedures, and must be skilled in the ability to identify and implement best practices and procedures.

Essential Duties
- Processes a heavy volume of payroll transactions and activities for new and existing employees which includes creating offer letters, processing, and approving academic and non-academic hires, renewals, and terminations
- Creates and modifies positions and including account funding
- Identifies overpayments/underpayments for appropriate action; processes and approves payroll corrections
- Assists in managing human resource processes, procedures, internal controls, and payroll quality for SSEBE
- Coordinates and manages personnel searches including applicant evaluation and hiring
- May coordinate and process visa applications for employees and non-employees
- Participates in internal and external audit requests
- Compiles source documents and other media for payroll reconciliations and respond to questions and additional requests
- Resolves and investigates payroll discrepancies using reporting tools (Data Warehouse, Analytics, Workday) and works as a liaison between SSEBE, FSE, ASU Human Resources and Financial Services to reach a solution and process needed transactions when applicable.
- Maintains and manages retention of appropriate hard and electronic personnel and financial records based on ASU OHR, Financial, Research, State and Federal guidelines.
- Works closely with school administration to develop and implement all departmental human resource activities to ensure adherence and compliance of college and university policies, practices, and regulations.
- Processes employment requisitions
- May supervise student workers.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two (2) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in high work volume environment managing multiple tasks and priorities; payroll; record keeping; ensuring adherence with policies, practices, and regulations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of electronic data processing as it applies to human resources/fiscal automated applications.
- Experience in planning and establishing priorities
- Experience in developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships both within and across organizational areas.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook).
- Experience using Human Resources Management Systems (i.e., PeopleSoft and BrassRing).
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic human resources practices, regulations, and standards.
- Evidence of effective communication skills.
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer.
- Stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
- Bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
- Ability to work both independently and within a complex structured team.
- Works from general instruction on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments. Exercises judgement within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
