Job Description
The School of Earth and Space Exploration’s Department HR Manager coordinates and manages all human resource functions for a complex, high volume department. This position leads and directs the HR team and reports to the Director of Operations and Research Advancement.

Salary Range
$66,000 - $82,000 per year, DOE
Essential Duties
- Oversees and manages all human resource functions for the unit.
- Supervises and coordinates daily work activities; assigns, prioritizes and organizes work load utilizing knowledge of staff expertise to maximize efficiency and accuracy.
- Monitors status of work in progress.
- Evaluates performance of assigned staff.
- Works closely with Senior Staff and prepares administrative/specialized reports as needed.
- Working closely and in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources, advises, interprets and provides direction to management and staff on university rules and procedures, Federal, State and local laws/regulations involving human resources, payroll and related benefit concerns.
- Working closely and in conjunction with The College and the Office of Human Resources, resolves or assists with the resolution of sensitive human resource issues.
- Working closely and in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources, advises and assists management and staff in the handling of employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances, including providing alternatives and facilitating decision-making for determining appropriate actions.
- Assesses, develops and implements procedures specific to improving effectiveness and efficiency within established policies.
- Works closely with the unit financial area to obtain account expenditure approvals in accordance with established financial guidelines and policies.
- Participates in a variety of departmental, college, and university-wide initiatives and meetings to represent unit's interests in the area of human resources and to ensure an integrative/ collaborative support of college and university interests.
- Serves as a representative of unit committees as assigned.
- Performs special assignments as instructed.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR,
Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with Higher Education.
- Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices and experience in effectively leading, training, supervising, and evaluating assigned staff.
- Experience with ASU systems such as PeopleSoft, Interfolio, Analytics, Affiliate process, Workday.
- Experience with academic searches, demonstrated knowledge of academic policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of exemplary customer services demonstrated through actively listening, acknowledging, and responding to every inquiry; taking ownership and resolving each concern or problem as appropriate; exhibiting professionalism and expertise in every interaction and engaging in professional development to meet expectations for service excellence.
- Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to changing priorities, sensitive/confidential information and short deadlines.
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
- Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
