The Department of Applied Economics at Oregon State University (OSU) is seeking a Department Head. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position.

This appointment includes indefinite tenure on a 9-month basis at 1.00 FTE at the rank of full professor within the Department of Applied Economics and is expected to maintain scholarly activity in relation to research, outreach, and education.
The Department Head provides overall administrative leadership in the department for all of its education and research functions statewide. These functions consist of undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extended education, and international activities. The Department Head oversees agricultural and resource economics programs on the Corvallis campus, the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, the Food Innovation Center and various county extension offices. Responsibilities include the coordination of departmental programs with other on-campus departments, state agencies, and other affiliated organizations. The Department Head reports directly to the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences. The position provides opportunities to participate in departmental research and education programs.
OSU is one of only two American universities to hold the Land, Sea, Sun and Space Grant designations and is the only Oregon institution recognized for its “very high research activity” (RU/VH) by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. OSU is comprised of 11 academic colleges with strengths in natural resources, earth dynamics and sustainability, life sciences, entrepreneurship and the arts and sciences. OSU has facilities and/or programs in every county in the state, including 12 regional experiment stations, 41 county extension offices, a branch campus in Bend, a major marine science center in Newport, and a range of programs and facilities in Portland. Key Responsibilities
60% Administration – Provide oversight of all departmental programs and activities in advising, extended education, research and scholarship, teaching, and service. Provide leadership to the Department’s development and implementation of a vision, goals and objectives that are compatible with CAS and University goals and objectives. Administers budgets. Foster relationships with clientele groups and alumni, may require driving to events and or branch experiment stations to meet with stakeholders. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and student and learner success.
15% Research and Scholarship – Participate in research teams addressing the economic and policy dimensions of agricultural and natural resource management issues, domestic and/or international. Professional development will be pursued through participation in professional scientific meetings and participation in workshops and other training.
15% Teaching – Serve on graduate student advisory committees and teach 1 course per year as needed and appropriate. Advise and mentor students in undergraduate and graduate programs and be committed to their learning both formally and informally. Demonstrate a commitment to student and learner success.
10% Service – Participates on department, college, and university committees and in professional organizations as appropriate to achieve departmental, college, university and professional goals.
What You Will Need
Ph.D. in agricultural or resource economics, economics or a closely related field and possess a record of teaching, research and professional accomplishments that will support tenure at the rank of Professor.
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and extended education and student and learner success.
A successful record of securing and administering grant/contract funds to support his/her own work.
Demonstrated effectiveness in communicating and working with diverse internal and external populations, including the public, other agencies, advisory groups, professional peers, and classified staff.
National or international reputation for scientific achievements in agricultural or resource economics, economics, or a closely related field, meriting appointment as a tenured full professor.
Understanding of agricultural and resource economics and evidence of interest in and likelihood of success in leading and managing an Applied Economics department.
A demonstrated appreciation for the mission of a Land-, Sea-, Sun-, and Space-Grant institution.
Demonstrated leadership abilities and administrative and budget-management experience.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
