The College of Design offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate studies in architecture, graphic and experience design, industrial design, landscape architecture and environmental planning, and media arts, design, and technology through several degree programs, including the Ph.D. and Doctor of Design.
The Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design (GDID) is one of the most prestigious Graphic and Industrial Design departments in the country. Our programs are consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation; our graduate programs have STEM designations. The faculty, equipped with outstanding national and international credentials, have positioned themselves as innovative leaders in the field.

The College of Design seeks an energetic, innovative, and insightful leader to serve as the next Head of the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design (GDID).
Essential Job Duties
The Department Head, Graphic Design and Industrial Design will be expected to champion our mission of fostering a thriving research and engagement environment, which has been steadily growing alongside the increasing number of doctoral candidates and tenure-track faculty appointments in our college. The Department Head will be expected to build relationships to support collaborations to current industry practices/partnerships, design scholarship, and external funding while encouraging, managing, promoting, and developing faculty and their careers. The successful candidate will have a mindset focused on current academic and industry practice. The successful candidate will have significant academic and scholarly qualifications and demonstrated ability to work well with people and build consensus.
Through consultation with the faculty, the Department Head directs the implementation of policies and programs under the oversight of the College Dean. The Department Head is expected to productively communicate with colleagues to promote a collaborative environment while being responsible for, among other things:
  • Leading faculty and students in a shared vision in collaboration with other disciplines in the College and the University;
  • Serving as the department representative to the College Administrative Council and Department Head meetings and acting as a conduit for the flow of information between the department, college, and university;
  • Overseeing faculty departmental course and service assignments;
  • Teaching approximately six (6) credit hours per year;
  • Managing the department budget;
  • Advising faculty on their teaching, research, and service responsibilities;
  • Conducting annual faculty performance reviews;
  • Administering and mentoring faculty through the Reappointment Promotion and Tenure (RPT) and Post Tenure Review (PTR) processes for the department faculty;
  • Overseeing curricular matters related to the programs, including course scheduling, and long-range planning;
  • Leading academic units in procedures specific to accreditation;
  • Fostering and supporting a culture of interdisciplinary research, engagement, teaching, and collaboration within the department, college, and across the university;
  • Engaging the department in college doctoral programs and university interdisciplinary initiatives;
  • Working in collaboration with the Dean to develop department and college-related fund-raising goals and ensure that donor funds are well stewarded in accordance with Office of Development policies and procedures;
  • Advising the Dean about faculty appointment matters, serving as a department representative, in collaboration with the Dean, to unit-specific alumni and professional groups;
  • Cultivating relationships with Alumni;
  • Promoting industry collaborations and partnerships.
Other Responsibilities
The roles of the Academic Unit Head and the Dean are mutually supportive. Each must work to assist the other to achieve the aspirations invested in the position. Personal communication between the two individuals is necessary to nurture and sponsor new ideas and sustain existing programs. The Dean depends on the Department Head to act as a senior advisor to help shape college policy while also expecting that the Department Head will implement policies established by the Dean or the related College Administrative Council.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Terminal Degree in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, or related field;
  • Seven (7) years of combined experience in Graphic Design or Industrial Design as an academic administrator, faculty member, and/or industry leader;
  • Credentials must support appointment at the rank of full professor.
Other Required Qualifications
Department Required Skills:
  • Related Graphic or Industrial Design management skills;
  • Participation in, and chairing an array of academic committees.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Academic administrative experience;
  • Program leadership experience;
  • Have received tenure or gone through an equivalent promotional, review process.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional practice experience outside of the academic context;
  • Have received tenure in an accredited graphic or industrial design program;
  • Ph.D. in graphic design, industrial design, or a related field;
  • Experience with program accreditation;
  • Experience in working with intercollegiate, interdisciplinary, and international partnerships and programs;
  • Experience in working with advisory boards and maintaining strong relationships with alumni and donors;
  • Experience with extramural funding for research and/or funding that supports creative scholarship.
