About NC State University
Founded in 1887, North Carolina State University (NC State) is an institution distinguished by its exceptional quality of research, teaching, and public service. At NC State, we create prosperity for North Carolina and the nation. We began as a land-grant institution grounded in agriculture and engineering. Today, we’re a pre-eminent research enterprise that excels across disciplines. NC State is a powerhouse in science, technology, engineering and math. We lead in agriculture, education, textiles, business and natural resources management. We’re at the forefront of teaching and research in design, the humanities and the social sciences, and we’re home to one of the world’s best colleges of veterinary medicine. Our more than 37,000 undergraduate and graduate students learn by doing. They pursue original research and start new companies. They forge connections with top employers and serve communities local and global. Through it all, they enjoy an outstanding return on investment. Whether it’s Princeton Review ranking NC State among the nation’s best values for universities, Money magazine named it the No. 1 best college for your money in North Carolina, U.S. News & World Report ranking NC State among the top 10 best values in public higher education, or named Forbes 2022 best large employer in North Carolina, the university has many reasons to be proud. Each year, NC State adds $6.5 billion to the statewide economy, equivalent to creating more than 90,000 new jobs. That represents a significant return on investment for the citizens of North Carolina in the form of research advances, innovative technologies, successful companies, skilled graduates, and new jobs waiting for them. Our 9,600 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Together, they forge powerful partnerships with government, industry, nonprofits, and academia to remake our world for the better. About the College of Veterinary Medicine
As one of the top veterinary schools in the country, the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to being a leader in professional education, clinical service, and research. The college also has an essential role to play in improving the quality of life for the citizens of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The college’s mission is to advance the veterinary profession and animal and human health through ongoing discovery and medical innovation; provide animals and their owners with extraordinary, compassionate medical care; and prepare the next generation of veterinarians and biomedical research scientists. The college is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.
The college anchors the 250-acre Centennial Biomedical Campus , an extension of NC State’s Centennial Campus. Instruction is provided through three academic departments: Clinical Sciences , Molecular Biomedical Sciences , and Population Health and Pathobiology . There are approximately 400 students enrolled in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional program and over 90 students enrolled in the multidisciplinary Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program. The college and teaching hospital is supported by more than 160 faculty and 450 staff members, and over 100 house officers (interns and residents). A unique feature of the campus is the 80-acre Teaching Animal Unit , a dynamic teaching lab for students to learn husbandry, production management, and livestock production procedures.
NC State promotes an integrated approach to problem solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world. NC State’s land grant mission of teaching, research and service is dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people.  Applicants are encouraged to review the institution’s mission, vision and strategic plan, and consider how their background, interest and experience would enable them to support the university. DVM students develop key competencies necessary for success in private practice, industry, government, and academia. The curriculum includes instruction and practice in teamwork, client interactions, and public communication as well as the development of interpersonal and organizational skills.
The NC State Veterinary Hospital sees an average of 35,000 cases annually. Clinical faculty includes internationally recognized certified specialists in over 30 disciplines, supported by highly trained veterinary technicians and staff. Small animal services are available across 16 Specialty departments and equine services are available across five departments . The Veterinary Hospital provides state-of-the-art patient care for companion animals, and equine and farm animals spread across three main facilities: The Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center, the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center, and the Veterinary Health and Wellness Center.
The College’s research enterprise is housed in 3 modern buildings on the CVM campus including the new Biomedical Partnership Center (BPC), a 40,000-square-foot building that opened in 2017. The BPC houses CVM faculty in research laboratories shared with faculty from the College of Engineering, including the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State and the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, as well as industry partners working in related biomedical research fields. The Research Building is a 3-floor building that houses faculty from all departments, purposely organized around laboratory space to promote interdepartmental collaboration. There is extensive laboratory space within the College of Veterinary Medicine, much of it renovated in the last 5 years to accommodate collaborative groups of investigators.
Since its inception, the College has been and remains a leader in One Health, with a strong role in translational and comparative research. Indeed, the college One Health program has played a central role in establishing the NC State Global One Health Academy. The College has excellent collaborative relationships with the nearby Duke University and University of North Carolina Schools of Medicine and has maintained 30 years of shared federal funding for research emphasis areas including cell biology, physiology, gross anatomy, developmental and reproductive biology, environmental science, and toxicology, genomics, neurobiology, regenerative medicine, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, immunology, and cancer. Through these efforts, the College prepares the next generation of biomedical researchers and veterinarians, conducts bench and clinical research to solve human and animal health problems, addresses critical ecosystem and public health issues, and promotes a clearer understanding and appreciation of the ramifications related to the growing human-animal bond that is at the center of these concerns.
