SUMMARY:

The Department of Computer Science & Information Systems is seeking an innovative and forward thinking individual to lead and advance the department.  The Department of Computer Science & Information Systems is one of the oldest in the state with programs taught at the main campus in Commerce, Texas, and at the Texas A&M System RELLIS campus in Bryan, Texas.  The department houses undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems and Cybersecurity.  In addition, the department offers a Master of Science degree in Computer Science. The successful candidate shall have significant research and/or industry experience in  cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), sensors, or software programming/coding. The anticipated commencement date for this position is June 1, 2024.

The position is a full-time, 9-month, tenured position, at the Associate or Full Professor rank, as well as, serve as Department Head for Computer Science & Information Systems with half-time teaching responsibilities. The position will also have a summer appointment serving as Department Head with half-time teaching responsibilities. The position is responsible for developing a productive and collaborative atmosphere, mentoring faculty, developing an effective shared governance system, working effectively with the college dean and senior administration, building excellence in curriculum and coursework scheduling in collaboration with the department faculty, and initiating and sustaining an externally funded research program.  Oversee the program(s) at the Texas A&M System RELLIS campus, Bryan, Texas, as well as on the main campus in Commerce, Texas.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works collaboratively with faculty to build a positive culture, policies, and communication channels
  • Serves as the chief advocate for advancing the mission of the department, as well as the college and university
  • Assesses departmental performance and determines critical requirements for program practices and documentation
  • Leads best practice expectations for recruitment and retention of students, faculty success, alumni relations, managing extramural funding, and other scholarly and fundraising initiatives
  • Promote and mentor the professional development of faculty within the department, including but not limited to supporting attendance at professional conferences, grant writing, academic and research publications, professional consulting, mentoring, and community engagement
  • Mentors faculty to success in achieving tenure and advancing through ranks
  • Maintains professional development and ongoing success of seasoned faculty
  • Performs annual evaluations of faculty and staff
  • Ensures that departmental course offerings optimize resources and are scheduled in a timely manner to ensure the smooth flow of student progress toward graduation
  • Exercises fiduciary responsibility on all departmental operating, special, and endowment accounts as well as fixed and consumable assets assigned to departmental programs
  • Monitors departmental scholarships closely and ensures they are fully awarded and made in a timely fashion
  • Develops and implements departmental plans for curriculum development, review and revision
  • Utilizes student assessment of instruction and input from faculty, program graduates, and external stakeholders / employers to identify and respond to areas of greater demand and to seek out new areas of strength
  • Oversee, in conjunction with program faculty and departmental staff, an effective and continuous student academic advising program for each academic program of study in the department
  • Monitors graduation rates, and ensures compliance with any relevant Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirements
  • Collaborates with departmental faculty to mentor new graduate students and ensure that any graduate assistants employed by the department, including those supported by extramural funds, receive appropriate training and mentoring to enable them to perform their job assignments professionally
  • Serves as the primary liaison with the dean, graduate school, the registrar, and institutional effectiveness office
  • Oversees the assessment processes used for regional and ABET accreditation
  • Keeps faculty informed of institutional issues in a timely and transparent fashion and manages departmental student issues; the graduation process; employment of adjunct faculty and GAs; departmental and program marketing, including the departmental website; student internships; alumni records; departmental fund-raising initiatives; ordering of equipment and/or supplies; facility renovations; and the completion of various required reports
  • Teach both undergraduate and graduate computer science courses
  • Lead the development of new undergraduate and/or graduate courses, as well as, new graduate certificates as needed.
  • Establish a strong publication record
  • Disseminate knowledge through presentations and publications
  • Actively seek and attract extramural funding and industry funded partnerships
  • Establish a network and partnerships within the regional industry
  • Serve on selected departmental, college and university committees
  • Oversee the program(s) at the Texas A&M System RELLIS campus as well as the main campus in Commerce, Texas
  • Participate in all aspects of the department’s and college’s activities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Earned doctorate in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, cybersecurity, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Academic background commensurate with the rank of associate professor or higher. Proven experience record in an area of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), sensors, or software programming/coding. 
  • Ability to: Multitask and work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students and others with varying cultures and backgrounds.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrated record of obtaining grants and/or extramural funding in an area of cybersecurity, artificial intelligent (AI), sensors, or software programming/coding.  Demonstrated industry experience in an area of cybersecurity, artificial intelligent (AI), sensors, or software programming/coding.  Experience with and/or working knowledge of ABET accreditation.  Teaching experience at the higher education level with evidence of teaching excellence.  Demonstrated experience at the Department Head / Chair or related leadership role.
