Job Description

Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students.  Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university.  SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College seeks a candidate to serve as Department Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences. This position will support the Division Dean in academic supervision, provide leadership within the department, and advocate on behalf of its faculty and students. The successful candidate will model good instruction and provide support to the Division Dean on administrative issues such as institutional effectiveness, faculty mentorship, assessment, hiring, and scheduling. This position is for internal candidates only.
Job Duties
This is a ten-month faculty position. Nine-months of this contract shall be spent on duties outlined in the regular faculty job description. This position will have additional duties providing administrative support to the Division Dean in the following areas:

  • Interviews and makes recommendations on the hiring of part-time faculty.
  • With the help of the faculty, recommends budget and supply requests for the department and helps manage departmental resources.
  • Mentors faculty, both full and part-time, on best practices in higher education, instructional technology, and college policy and practices.
  • Conducts annual evaluations for part-time faculty within the Division.
  • Supervises the assessment activities of the department, including general education assessment if applicable.
  • Assists with accrediting activities.
  • Supports the dean in all areas of curriculum management and oversite including program planning, quality assurance, compliance with instructional requirements, and internship/clinical placements.
  • Assists with recruitment and outreach activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
