As part of a strategic investment for a transformative expansion of the faculty of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins is poised for significant growth in the coming years. To this end, we invite applications for the Chair who will manage a major growth initiative. The proposed initiative aims to strengthen existing foci in geology, climate sciences and planetary science in the department and to significantly expand ecological research. The expansion is expected to be synergistic with other major initiatives including the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Initiative, the Planetary Health Alliance, a new School of Government and Policy, the SNF Agora Institute, as well as leveraging long-term strengths such as the Bloomberg School of Public Health,Maryland Advanced Research and Computing Center, and the Applied Physics Laboratory. We also aim to strengthen local external partnerships with the Space Telescope Science Institute, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, Department of Agriculture Beltsville Research Center, and with MSI's such as Morgan State University. The successful candidate will be committed to community building, interdisciplinary science, the pursuit of excellence, and the nurturing of diversity. Our goal is to establish Johns Hopkins as a leader in understanding planetary systems broadly and improving the health of these systems and the people who depend on them here on Earth. For more information please contact: Anand Gnanadesikan, Professor and Chair at [email protected].
We seek individuals with experience in connecting traditional disciplinary sciences (geology, ecology, biology, atmospheric and oceanic sciences) to broader societal issues in general area of Sustainability (a nonexhaustive list of examples would include food, water, energy, and human health). A Ph.D.. and an outstanding record of research and teaching commensurate with current full Professors in the Department is expected. We are also looking for experience in building or leading successful interdisciplinary programs. The Department greatly values experience and goals related to improving access to the field for underrepresented groups.
