Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is a 40-year-old medical school with a strong primary care orientation. The school established a three-fold mission in 1974 that continues to serve as a guiding framework for our overall educational efforts: The Brody School of Medicine is nationally recognized for the number of graduates practicing primary care, approximately 42%. The Brody School of Medicine provides many of the doctors practicing in North Carolina: 1 out of 5 doctors in North Carolina is a Brody grad! The Brody School of Medicine is considered one of the highest value medical schools in the nation; the average amount of debt for a Brody graduate is $60,000 less than the average amount for other medical schools. Brody is annually recognized as one of the top ten institutions in the nation for preparing family doctors by the American Academy of Family physicians. One in six family physicians practicing in North Carolina is a Brody graduate. ECU was an early pioneer in telemedicine and now leads a statewide telepsychiatry initiative, NC SteP, aimed at improving access to mental health in a cost effective way. The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. East Carolina University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Department of Emergency Medicine is one of 19 departments of the Brody School of Medicine at ECU. The emergency department has more than 40,000 square feet with 58 dedicated treatment areas. An additional nine treatment spaces are located in the detached MedDirect facility, which is designed to expeditiously evaluate and treat minor illnesses and injuries. The emergency department treats patients from a area that is 29 North Carolina counties large. Within the region its serves as the principal source of emergency care for Level I trauma, stroke, pediatrics, poisoning, and acute cardiac disease. Since its inception, ECU Emergency Medicine has focused on scholarship through developing new knowledge, translating evolving knowledge, and disseminating discovered knowledge. Residents have matriculated to ECU from across the country and have subsequently moved throughout the country to enjoy successful careers as clinicians and academicians. Residents in our current classes have brought diverse backgrounds and experiences to our program. The EMS system encompasses a spectrum that includes a career fire and rescue department and very rural volunteers. EastCare, with its three helicopters and multiple ground mobile intensive care units, complete more than 8,000 critical-care transports annually. |
Job Duties | The Chair of Emergency Medicine will provide strategic leadership, direction and coordination of clinical, administrative, education and research endeavors. The successful candidate will be a respected emergency medicine Physician with a track record of excellence in clinical care, education, and research. The Chair is expected to mentor faculty to meet the missions of the department and institution, while promoting ongoing efforts to enhance a diverse working environment. In addition, the successful candidate will also serve as the ECU Distinguished Professor of Emergency Medicine. |
Minimum Education/Experience | MD or equivalent in relevant discipline; Board Certification in Emergency Medicine; Eligible for a North Carolina Medical License; 10 years of experience with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role at an academic department of emergency medicine; demonstrated scholarship |
