Position Summary
Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Cariology and Operative Dentistry. This is a newly configured department at IU School of Dentistry, designed to enable additional growth and development, and integration of these two disciplines in education, research and patient care, building upon the strengths and a long history of impact of IU faculty leaders.in these areas. This is a 1.0 FTE tenured position at the rank of either associate or full professor.
IUSD AND THE CHAIR POSITION
Our greatest strength at IUSD is our people. The department chair will be an internationally recognized scholar and leader in one or both of these disciplines. The chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dentistry and serves as an important member of the School’s leadership team. Indiana University School of Dentistry is the only dental school in the state of Indiana and offers programs ranging from the certificate in Dental Assisting, BS in Dental Hygiene, DDS, MSD in advanced dental education programs in the specialties, as well as the PhD in Dental Science. The department is home to a post-doctoral program in cariology and operative dentistry that awards to the Master of Science in Dentistry degree. The Oral Health Research Institute at IU School of Dentistry is a research core and program that supports excellence in clinical research as well as laboratory facilities and services that cariology, dental erosion, fluoride, dental products, and dental materials research. These two assets provide unique opportunities to support innovation and advancement of cariology and operative dentistry through education and research at IUSD.
The department chair will possess the vision, leadership, knowledge and expertise required to build a collaborative team of faculty clinicians, educators, and scholars who with the professional staff advance the goals of the department and the School, to establish IUSD as an internationally recognized innovator and leader in cariology and operative dentistry, and to ensure our graduates are highly skilled clinicians who are prepared to provide person-centered oral healthcare for a diverse population in Indiana and around the world. To achieve these goals, the department chair will:
  • Lead and implement a departmental strategic vision to position IUSD as an international innovator and leader in cariology and operative dentistry, aligned with vision and goals of the IUSD Strategic Plan 2025;
  • Recruit, retain and develop, faculty, students, residents, and professional staff who advance the department’s strategic vision;
  • Ensure departmental academic, clinical, and research programs, services, and activities remain aligned and compliant with CODA Standards;
  • Provide programmatic oversight of pre-doctoral, allied dental and post-doctoral education;
  • Nurture and sustain a culture that promotes faculty and staff continuous professional development and lifelong learning;
  • Maintain an environment of inclusive excellence, in which students, faculty and staff of all backgrounds and aspirations feel and know they belong;
  • Ensure all IUSD compliance expectations are met by the department’s faculty, staff and students;
  • Practice and promote ethical and equitable fiscal stewardship;
  • Lead by example to remain actively committed to one’s professional and personal development.

Fritts DDS Clinical Care Center on the IUPUI campus and is both adjacent to local hospitals and part of an urban academic health center. We deliver a wide range of services and outreach to more than 20,000 patients per year. We enroll approximately 800 students annually in degree and/or certificate programs in dentistry, allied dental programs, PhD, and advanced dental specialty programs tailored to current and future needs of the professions and the communities we serve. Basic Qualifications
ESSENTIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Essential requirements to qualify for consideration of this position include:
  • A professional record of scholarship, teaching and service which fulfill the requirements for a tenured associate or full professor at Indiana University School of Dentistry
  • DDS or DMD degree from a CODA-accredited program or equivalent
  • Eligibility for and attainment of an Indiana dental license by the hire start date
  • Five or more years academic leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated strengths in leading and managing people, including mentoring and coaching of faculty, staff, residents and students
  • A highly collaborative leadership style
  • Documented success in leading strategic initiatives
  • Proven record of creating and maintaining inclusive and diverse teams

Additional Qualifications
PREFERRED CREDENTIALS
  • Formal advanced education at the Master’s or Doctoral level (PhD) in cariology, operative dentistry, health economics, health administration public health, or a related field
  • Formal leadership education
  • National or international recognition as a scholar and thought leader within the dental profession
Salary and Rank Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
