This position may be eligible for Hybrid Work, working remotely for up to two days per week after the initial 90 days of employment.

Salary Range: $65,866/year or higher, commensurate with experience and/or education

JOB SUMMARY 

The Department Business Administrator III manages the administrative, financial, and human resources operations of a complex department.

DUTIES 

  • Plans and manages the department's human and financial resources to support department objectives
  • Provides financial accountability and ensures compliance with state, university, and external funding agency guidelines; responsible for all administrative and financial affairs of the department, including personnel, procurement, travel, accounts payable, accounts receivable and general accounting-related issues within the department
  • Establishes the work assignments of staff and provides guidance as needed; fills vacancies, defines job duties, sets performance goals, and conducts annual performance appraisals; counsels employees and recommends disciplinary action; makes recommendations on promotions and new hires
  • Establishes or participates in the establishment of operational and administrative guidelines and inventory controls; enforces safety compliance rules and regulations
  • Serves as the department liaison with Payroll, Human Resources, and other department business managers
  • Oversees the management and maintenance of the database for all personnel and payroll records

  • Performs tasks related to specific department/college

  • Supervises full-time and/or part-time employees

Delegation of Work:

  • Supervises full-time and/or part-time employees

Supervision Given:

  • Makes final decisions on evaluating employee performance, hiring new employees, and disciplinary actions
  • Makes final decision on scheduling employee work hours
  • Makes final decision on coaching and counseling; training; provides recommendations on handling employee grievances and complaints; and makes a final decision on granting time off

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of all relevant university policies and procedures and of the related trends, issues, and accepted practices
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and budget management practices
  • Knowledge of the principles of purchasing in a higher education environment

Skills:

  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office and PeopleSoft
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills

WORK LOCATION AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment that does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements
  • The individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing, etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks
  • Must have precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Must have the ability to move items of up to 30lbs
