Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex oral health problems. An interdisciplinary team of faculty in craniofacial oral health care, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, and hospital and special care dentistry lead the division.
Position Summary
These Dental Residents are participants in a postdoctoral advanced dental specialty training certificate program in the UNC School of Dentistry. Dental residency programs provide both clinical and didactic training in a dental specialty field and applied basic sciences. These programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. Participants must be admitted to these programs by the Advanced Education Program Admission Committee. Principal Functions: The clinical component of the training program places the resident in direct patient care, an emphasis is placed on the comprehensive care of patients presenting with a broad range of dental concerns. Although there is a concerted effort to provide training and experience in the newest methodologies and techniques in dentistry, a major focus of clinical training is to enhance the resident’s ability to make judgments in diagnosis, treatment planning and decision-making during the course of treatment. Residents are challenged to develop treatment plans that are tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Those treatment plans should place the oral health considerations of the patient in the context of a number of medical, personal and financial factors. The didactic component of training programs and involve all the recognized disciplines in dentistry and related sciences. Primarily utilizing the seminar format, didactic offerings are made in the areas of physical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning, prevention, periodontics, operative dentistry, prosthodontics, orthodontics, TMD, pediatric dentistry, dental implants, oral surgery, anxiety and pain control, Endodontics, special needs patients, literature review and practice management. Residents are expected to take an active role in these presentations and in many cases will be called upon to lead seminar sessions.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or equivalent degree.
