Job Description

To perform fundamental and expanded duties assisting a licensed dentist; perform clerical functions associated with a dental office; perform related work.

Examples of Duties

1. Dental procedures.

  • Under supervision of a licensed dentist: Fundamental
  • Retracts patient's cheek, tongue, and other tissue
  • Removes water syringes
  • Takes, exposes, and develops x-rays of the mouth, gums, jaws, and/or teeth
  • Applies topical medications
  • Places rubber dams in patient's mouth
  • Removes excess cement from and adjacent to crowns, bridges, and orthodontic bands
  • Places matrix bands
  • Performs dietary and salivary analysis, demonstrates oral care procedures and techniques
  • Removes and replaces ligature wires
  • Removes sutures
  • Charts patient's mouth
  • Performs infection control procedures flushes evacuation system with chemical cleansers
  • Places and removes temporary restorations
  • Mechanically polishes restorations
  • Monitors patient while nitrous oxide is being administered
  • Applies pit and fissure sealants
  • After examination by a dentist and removal of calculus by a dentist or dental hygienist
  • Practices cornal polishing to remove soft substances from the teeth with pumice or other abrasive

2. Office procedures.

  • Completes reports on patient treatment, x-rays, days of operation, and fees charged
  • Completes admittance sheets and insurance forms
  • Keeps records of services rendered
  • Keeps dental records current with medical history
  • Schedules recalls and other appointments
  • Compiles data for budget preparation
  • Researches prices and equipment specifications
  • Orders supplies and equipment and keeps accurate inventory
  • Orders repairs on dental equipment
  • Delivers and picks up material for dental lab

3. Leadwork.

  • Some positions may monitor the work of incumbents in the Dental Assistant 1 classification

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Performing fundamental and expanded duties of a dental assistant
  • Completing dental radiographs and alginate impressions
  • Completing dental charting and notations
  • Performing clerical duties associated with a dental office

MQ Specialties

  • Some positions may require Spanish and English speaking skills
