Scope of Job
Oversees the Office of Dean of Students and provides administrative oversight for Student Accessibility Services, the Center for Student Involvement, Spirit Programs, and Student Rights and Responsibilities. The Dean partners with administrators, faculty, and students to create rich learning opportunities that integrate academic experiences with life outside the classroom. Responsible for advancing a climate supportive of students from diverse backgrounds; designs, oversees and/or implements initiatives, programs and events that enhance student engagement, and aligns practices with the strategic direction of the institution.
Description of Duties
  • Oversees a seamless student experience of access and support which may include programming and services for student activities and organizations, conduct, accessibility, health and wellness, former foster youth, leadership, and community service, etc.
  • Provides leadership and vision for the planning, organizing, coordinating, and assessment of student life initiatives, while achieving University goals and objectives. Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and efficiency, and affects change required for continuous improvement.
  • Develops programs and procedures that support a healthy and safe university community. Assists with university-wide crisis/emergency response and provides support to students and families in emergency situations. Responds pro-actively to student concerns and manages student crises effectively.
  • Provides administrative oversight to the compliance aspects of Student Rights & Responsibilities, the Center for Student Involvement, Spirit Programs, and Student Accessibility Services to strengthen a culture that supports an engaged, accessible, safe, and respectful environment.
  • Engages in continuous, effective, and seamless coordination among and between numerous University offices to achieve retention and student success goals.
  • Develops, implements and asses educationally-purposeful support services and co-curricular programs that meet the varying needs of a diverse student population across multiple locations.
  • Builds relationships with community members and organizations to more closely connect the student experience and activities with community resources, opportunities, and needs.
  • Represents the University in the community on matters pertaining to student life.
  • Manages resources, university assets, information, and budgets in compliance with federal/state regulations and university policies.
  • Ensures that student success, which is at the core of UTRGV’s mission, is implemented in every aspect of the student life experience and that students perceive that experience as a smooth and coherent whole that is integrally tied to their academic experience.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education
Master’s degree from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Doctorate degree from an accredited university in related fields of study, such as Higher Education Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, Leadership and Policy
Licenses/Certifications
None.
Required Experience
Seven (7) years of related experience, including five (5) years in director-level role in a variety of student programs or related field. Strong background and relevant experience in directing programs related to student life, particularly working in collaboration with other Student Affairs units, Enrollment Management, and Academic Affairs.
Preferred Experience
A range of experience in student success initiatives, such as involvement in enrollment management, P-16, or academic success programming or leadership. Director level experience in Student Affairs role.
Equipment
Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills. Commitment to a highly collaborative approach to program development and implementation. Strong data analytic and assessment skills and orientation. In-depth knowledge of best practices in student life and a strong understanding of current and emergent issues of relevance to students. An understanding and appreciation of the unique role of UTRGV as a significant Hispanic Serving Institution in promoting Hispanic student success. Demonstrated commitment to working with all constituencies including ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse students, staff, faculty, and community members. A thorough understanding of student development and learning theories and their application to student life programs and initiatives.
