Scope of Job | Oversees the Office of Dean of Students and provides administrative oversight for Student Accessibility Services, the Center for Student Involvement, Spirit Programs, and Student Rights and Responsibilities. The Dean partners with administrators, faculty, and students to create rich learning opportunities that integrate academic experiences with life outside the classroom. Responsible for advancing a climate supportive of students from diverse backgrounds; designs, oversees and/or implements initiatives, programs and events that enhance student engagement, and aligns practices with the strategic direction of the institution. |

Supervision Received | General supervision from the assigned supervisor. |
Supervision Given | Direct supervision of assigned staff. |
Required Education | Master’s degree from an accredited university. |
Preferred Education | Doctorate degree from an accredited university in related fields of study, such as Higher Education Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, Leadership and Policy |
Licenses/Certifications | None. |
Required Experience | Seven (7) years of related experience, including five (5) years in director-level role in a variety of student programs or related field. Strong background and relevant experience in directing programs related to student life, particularly working in collaboration with other Student Affairs units, Enrollment Management, and Academic Affairs. |
Preferred Experience | A range of experience in student success initiatives, such as involvement in enrollment management, P-16, or academic success programming or leadership. Director level experience in Student Affairs role. |
Equipment | Use of standard office equipment. |
Working Conditions | Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley. |
Other | Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills. Commitment to a highly collaborative approach to program development and implementation. Strong data analytic and assessment skills and orientation. In-depth knowledge of best practices in student life and a strong understanding of current and emergent issues of relevance to students. An understanding and appreciation of the unique role of UTRGV as a significant Hispanic Serving Institution in promoting Hispanic student success. Demonstrated commitment to working with all constituencies including ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse students, staff, faculty, and community members. A thorough understanding of student development and learning theories and their application to student life programs and initiatives. |
