Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities

Fairmont State University is seeking a visionary and dynamic individual to serve as the inaugural Dean of the Middle College. Middle College is a 2-year program designed to provide foster youth in the state of West Virginia with the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree while living on campus. The Dean of the Middle College will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and academic direction for the Middle College program.
This position will lead Middle College by spearheading collaboration and partnerships within the state of West Virginia and beyond. The Dean should remain highly knowledgeable and proactive about state-level activities and policies related to foster care and public education programming.
The College expects the Dean to absorb new information and share it with peers and collaborators to make recommendations for innovative practice.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate data relative to the impact of the Middle College at Fairmont State University, carefully partnering with the institution’s Data Analyst and Development Office to establish the most effective reporting standards and research agenda for the program.
  • Collaborate with internal and external offices including academic affairs, student services, and KVC to assist in the marketing, recruitment, enrollment, and retention strategies of Middle College students.
  • In collaboration with the President, Provost, and KVC leadership, identify and cultivate additional funding sources to further enhance the program’s ability to serve youth in care and provide services to these students to assist their pursuit of a college degree.
  • Represent Middle College as the primary liaison to a portfolio of partners invested in Middle College such as WV DoHR, Marion County Public Schools, WV Board of Education, Aetna, etc.
  • Manages the growth, development, and promotion of the Middle College, including:
    • Preparation of guidelines for faculty, staff, and students;
    • Maintain/initiate formal agreements with schools;
    • Recommend policy and procedural changes;
    • Oversee orientation activities for students and instructors;
    • Coordinate with academic departments at the College;
    • Problem solving, and;
    • Serve as an advisor and a resource for students, guardians, and counselors.
  • Works collaboratively with the Registrar and Admissions staff to ensure that special registration assistance is provided for Middle College students.
  • Collaborates with Academic Affairs for course offerings, faculty credentialing, support, and assessment.
  • Provide leadership and administration for planning, developing, implementing, directing, monitoring, and reviewing/developing K-12 career pathways, and educational programming with local high schools, government, and higher education educational partners.
  • Coordinate and schedule the development, staffing, and facility needs of the program.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and sensitively with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work independently, with attention to detail and deadlines
  • Conduct college business professionally and ethically.
  • Communicate effectively in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the public.
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted within the established guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, and standards safely and efficiently, with minimal supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the provost.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Minimum of 7 years of proven leadership experience in both K-12 and Higher Education environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an alternative education setting a significant plus.
Doctorate degree preferred
