Job Description


Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years.  It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force.  TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.  The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The Dean of Advising will be responsible for developing and coordinating an integrated advising system for students across all departments and divisions; develop a vision for supporting consistent, high-quality holistic coaching and advising across the college; and manage a team of advisors. Developing and implementing a program of advisor preparation and training; coordinating the advising institute, providing supervision to advising coordinators; overseeing faculty advising; chairing the academic advising council; communicating with faculty, staff and administrators about the advising program and its goals; monitoring advising loads, and working with other student affairs staff as appropriate.
  • Provide advising and academic coaching to enable students to learn, be retained, and graduate. Advise students concerning an appropriate academic schedule, choice of major, number of hours that may be taken, probation, and/or suspension. Consult with faculty and other support services regarding student needs and refer students to appropriate resources. As Campus Dean develop relationships and partnerships with the campus community and collaborate with college personnel to discuss facility use and campus specific initiatives.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead college-wide advising team to provide comprehensive advising services to students.
  • Provide customer service training to advisors annually.
  • Document, analyze, evaluate, and track student academic and professional progress through case management software.
  • Review advising loads and assess best approach for efficiency.
  • Coach students in identifying academic, personal and career goals and help them develop strategies to reach those goals.
  • Communicate with students and advisors, including leading development of a remodeled Academic Advising webpage.
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning; Admissions; Registrar; Academic Units; and Student Retention to create and share data-informed metrics about student success.
  • Coordinate, supervise, provide leadership support and create opportunities for ongoing professional development and team-building for the Student Affairs advisor team.
  • Serve on college-wide committees as assigned.
  • Maintain active participation and engagement in relevant student affairs professional associations.
  • Collaborate with administrators, faculty and staff to develop and coordinate programs, services and initiatives that provide integrated instructional and student services that meet the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Assess student satisfaction, learning and engagement utilizing available data to inform decisions and strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Enrollment Management to increase student completion, success and access supporting the vision for success while focusing on completion.
  • Implement policies and ensure operations are aligned with the college’s mission, vision, values and institutional goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership in the ongoing training, policies and procedures to faculty and staff.

  • Maintain various computer-based systems for activity tracking and assessment as appropriate.
  • Physical Space Management
  • Review and approve facility use agreement/rentals.
  • Assign space for classes and offices as appropriate.
  • Community Responsibility
  • Support and expand collaboration with groups and organizations in the community.
  • Develop relationships with local high school districts and community service agencies; business, educational and governmental organizations as needed to respond to student needs.
  • Budgeting
  • Develop and monitor budgets for all units under the Advising Department.
  • Document, track, and report on departmental expenditures and appropriate fiscal resource management. Make budget recommendations to the Vice President based on departmental goals and anticipated areas of growth or change.
  • Campus Morale
  • Employ best practices to develop a strong sense of teamwork, equity and investment in the college’s mission.
  • Develop strong relationships with students, staff and faculty; promote availability and visibility to student body via active participation and presence on campus and attendance/involvement in campus programs and events as appropriate.
  • Generate enthusiastic and active faculty/staff support for advising activities, programs and initiatives.
  • Planning and Assessment
  • Develop strategic plans, goals and recommendations for advising activities, programs and services.
  • Compile and analyze data related to student participation and program evaluation; develop organizational work processes which facilitate attaining established program goals and objectives.
  • Report and make recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs regarding advising activities and strategies.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Educational Administration, Student Personnel Administration or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university; doctorate preferred.

  • Progressively responsible higher education work experience in student services.

  • Proven leadership in a large, complex organizational setting, preferably within a community college.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary theories and practices affecting student services and academic programming.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy and student development.

  • Ability to coordinate the division’s service programs with other college divisions and offices so as to be responsive to the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Proven ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and the ability to tolerate and flourish in an environment characterized by multiple complex factors, competing priorities, ambiguous situations, and resource challenges.

  • Ability to supervise and evaluate assigned staff while building a highly effective working team.

  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.

  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize administrative applications of information technology.

  • Demonstrated skill in managing budgets, equipment and other institutional resources.
