By providing instruction, conducting research, and performing service in health, exercise science, recreation, and leisure, the college strives to advance and disseminate knowledge concerning enhancement of health, physical performance, and quality of life of individuals and communities, particularly those is eastern North Carolina.
Job Duties
East Carolina University seeks a dynamic and visionary leader for the position of Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance. This is an exceptional opportunity to strengthen and shape the future of this important University asset. The College has experienced significant growth and development in recent years, and the next Dean will provide leadership and strategic direction for the future of the College and ensure the highest standards of quality in research and instruction.
The Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance is the chief executive officer of the College and is responsible to the Provost and the Chancellor for the general administration of the College. The Dean provides leadership and vision in strategic planning and implementation of programs and leads College development activities. More specific responsibilities of the Dean position include:
* Serves as administrator and reviewing officer of College department chairs; programs, Director Human Performance Laboratory, Director Advising Center, and Associate and Assistant deans
* Serve as mentor to College administrators
* Serves as liaison between department chairs and chancellor, provost, and vice chancellors
* Allocates resources (e.g., EHRA and SHRA positions; annual budgets; and special funds) to departments
* Allocates facilities under College control and coordinates facility planning
* Makes recommendations on the reappointment, tenure, and promotion of College faculty
* Works collaboratively with other deans on priorities and programs identified through the University’s and the Division’s strategic planning process
* Works collaboratively with deans and other university offices in interdisciplinary programs and inter-college programs
* Appointment of department chairs, associate deans and assistant deans
* Recommends hiring of all personnel to Chancellor’s delegate, e.g., Provost
* Works with ECU Development Office and Major Gift Officers on fund-raising initiatives
* Serves as College’s chief public relations officer
* Insures University policies are followed and reinforces a culture of compliance
* Insures the timely completion of reports
* Ensures that the College Code of Operations is followed
* Performs other duties as assigned by the Chancellor or Provost
Contingent upon availability of funds.
Minimum Education/Experience
At a minimum, candidates for the position should have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution, a record consistent with appointment as a full professor in a College department, exceptional communication skills, and relevant administrative experience.

- A demonstrated track record showing distinguished teaching, research, external funding, and scholarly publications that exhibit a balanced commitment to academic excellence
- A track record of success in a large, complex college or similar organization; an astute understanding of finances and the relationship between academic priorities and the budget
- An open and consultative leadership style; the ability to collaborate with and motivate faculty, staff, and students to take the College to a heightened level of success
- A dedication to the mission and vision of ECU; a motivation to advocate for access, interdisciplinary research and teaching, and engagement
- The ability to inspire, cultivate key external constituencies, attract partners, raise funds, generate enthusiasm among alumni, and obtain commitments to support the College
- High motivation, absolute integrity, enthusiastic optimism and the perseverance to bring initiatives to fruition.
