Organizational Unit Overview

Harriot College, with nearly 500 faculty members, is the largest academic unit at ECU. The three divisions of the college – the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics – offer 36 undergraduate degrees, 18 master’s degrees, 5 doctoral degrees, and 20 pre- and post-baccalaureate certificates through 15 departments and 16 interdisciplinary programs.

Job Duties

Internal Search

The Dean of Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences will integrate the mission of the College with that of the University and provide inspiration for advances in teaching, research, and service.

As the chief executive officer of the College, the Dean works with faculty and staff representing the College’s departments, programs, and centers, oversees strategic planning, advancement, and budget development, and guides resource allocation, teaching, research, service, outreach, and administration. The Dean supports shared governance and promotes a diverse and collegial environment.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, the Dean is responsible for overseeing the largest academic unit at East Carolina University. The Dean provides strategic, collaborative leadership promoting the importance of a liberal arts education throughout the University.

The incoming Dean will:

Support a large and diverse faculty, overseeing faculty recruitment and development, promotion and tenure, and the appointment of department chairs, associate deans, interdisciplinary directors, and research directors, and serve as liaison between the College and the University’s Division of Academic Affairs.

Shape program and curriculum development, encourage innovations in teaching and learning, establish faculty workloads, and make decisions about areas for new faculty hiring.

Promote the liberal arts within the University and advocate for College academic priorities during budgeting processes.

Foster and promote development and growth of research programs within the departments and centers of Harriot College, and collaboration among researchers within the University community.

Develop a strategy to address the economic, demographic, and technological trends that impact student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.

Work collaboratively with other Deans on priorities and programs identified through the University’s strategic planning process, interdisciplinary programs, and inter-college programs.

Provide leadership and a high degree of personal involvement in resource acquisition for the College, including the cultivation of local resources and the development of a larger base of donors, including alumni.

This appointment is contingent upon available funding.

Minimum Education/Experience

The successful candidate will be a distinguished, nationally recognized educator with a record of distinction in scholarship and in leadership and administration. This position requires an earned terminal degree in a discipline represented in the College and qualifications for appointment with permanent tenure at the rank of Professor.

It is essential that the successful candidate demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship and a strong capacity for facilitating collaboration within the University community. In addition, the successful candidate must have an established record of effectiveness beyond the departmental level, with experience in strategic planning, budgetary management, administrative processes, academic policy, fundraising, and faculty and staff recruitment and retention.

Experience administering Ph.D. programs is preferred.

Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.
