General Information
JMU Libraries seeks a Data Services Librarian who will assist in establishing campus-wide connections related to the data needs of faculty and students. They will provide support and content expertise related to the broad array of data-related activities on a research campus, including research data management, federal funding guidelines, consideration of data privacy and ethics, and awareness of data-related tools and products. As a member of the Scholarly Communications Strategies team, they will also collaborate with colleagues to support the mission of the department.
This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track position with instructional faculty status. We anticipate hiring at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Scholarly Communications Strategies. Duties and Responsibilities
Establish connections and actively communicate with stakeholders within the Libraries and across campus to provide data services that meet the current and future needs of the campus community.
Provide instruction and consultation on the creation, management, finding, and sharing of research data.
Work with Libraries colleagues to design and deliver instruction related to data literacy across disciplines.
Maintain awareness of developments in the data science field, particularly as they relate to programs of study at the university.
Engage in professional development to maintain current knowledge of trends and changes in academic librarianship related to the position and in general.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or international equivalent) or data-related field. Degree must be obtained prior to the start date.  Target start date is July 2024.
  • Knowledge of the trends and best practices in data management throughout the research lifecycle, including the usage of data repositories and public data sets.
  • Understanding of data ethics and privacy, in both the research and educational contexts.
  • Working knowledge of good project management practices, with the ability to meet deadlines and work with a high degree of accuracy.

Additional Considerations:
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience providing library instruction using information literacy concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish services in partnership with academic and/or administrative departments.
  • Knowledge of the impact of artificial intelligence in educational or research settings.
  • Awareness of data analysis and visualization tools.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
