Job Overview

The Data Scientist assists in furthering Georgetown’s mission to promote social justice. They support the creation of an annual ‘globalization and shared prosperity’ index, which will map the geographic distribution of districts and counties vulnerable to -and thriving from- different aspects of globalization in the U.S., as well as identify and quantify the multidimensional nature of the benefits and costs that they bear.

They lead the research, writing, data and statistical analysis processes to create a robust index. Expectations include the ability to perform analysis with limited supervision; to deliver high quality work in a timely manner; and to participate in the development, dissemination, and presentation of research findings.

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to Professor Rudra, the Data Scientist oversees the technical work undertaken by research assistants hired by the Lab. 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - preference for Master’s Degree in Economics, International Relations, or Mathematics
  • At least one year of experience coding and working with large datasets - preference for at least 2 years of relevant research experience
  • A knowledge of microeconometrics, international trade and related fields = such as labor, industrial organization, and political economy
  • Experience with coding and the management of large databases
  • Strong knowledge and work experience with large datasets dealing with issues of economic development
  • Strong written, research, and oral communications skills
  • High functionality in Microsoft Office software package and proven expertise in statistical software such as R and Stata
  • Ability to meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
  • Professional demeanor, high level of comfort working in a culturally-diverse environment, and with high-profile individuals from academic, policy, corporate, government, and international circles
  • Ability to work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment. 
  • Creativity, flexibility, adaptability, and openness to engaging in iterative and co-constructed research with others
  • Excellent data collection, analysis and synthesis, and writing skills, and ability to work interpedently and in teams in the research process
  • Capacity to connect details and data and bring them to a larger conversation, and to help make data and research understandable to decisionmaker and policymaker audiences and responsive to their needs and contexts
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well under multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong professional judgement and cultural-capacity in working with working with diverse groups of practitioners, researchers, and with policy makers from multiple country contexts, including those with high-level roles
