Summary
Baylor College of Medicine and the Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) seek a Data Scientist to join our team. You will join a dynamic research team investigating neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Participation in national and international human genomics consortia foster remarkable opportunities to integrate computational and experimental investigations. As a Data Scientist, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing advanced analytical and statistical models to support research investigations on the genetics and genomics of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and related disorders. You will work closely with the Center for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases (CAND), including affiliated and collaborating clinicians, bioinformaticians, geneticists and other team members to identify opportunities for data-driven insights on disease mechanisms and potential therapies. The data scientist will develop and refine their independent project(s), and be responsible for designing, implementing, and interpreting sophisticated computational genomic analyses. They will additionally take the lead on writing scientific manuscripts as well as contributing to research grant applications. The data scientist will also collaborate closely with other team members performing wet-lab experimental studies for follow-up and functional dissection of nominated targets and pathways. Candidates must have substantial experience in the field of statistical genetics and genomics.
Job Duties
- Evaluate, process, and analyze high throughput datasets, such as RNA, ChIP, WGS, GWAS, eQTL, proteomics, single-cell data, etc.
- Develop predictive models and algorithms for gene discovery, and maintain computational platforms and analysis pipelines.
- Apply established and emerging methods, including machine learning, for analysis of genomic and other data.
- Communicate findings and insights through data visualizations, presentations, and reports.
- Work closely with other computational and bench scientists.
- Draft and complete manuscripts for publication.
- Stay current with emerging trends and techniques in data science and machine learning, and apply them to solve real-world problems.
- Assist with training and co-mentoring of more junior team members, including undergraduate and graduate students
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in statistics, science, mathematics or related field.
- Five years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Experience in statistical genetics and related analyses of large-scale multi-modal genomic datasets.
- Strong programming skills in Python or R.
- Knowledge of machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and data visualization techniques.
- Strong communication and scientific reporting skills (verbal, written, and graphical).
