Data Science Specialist


Job Description

The Data Science Specialist will collaborate with colleagues within Educational Outreach and Student Services and the broader university to design and implement data services and programming.  The successful candidate will coordinate data collection, analyze quality, document processes and procedures, and contribute to research design and reporting efforts that support the university’s mission, both independently and within a team. They will also provide decision support analysis to inform project prioritization of student success and outreach strategies while contributing to the advancement of data literacy and research across the division.
This position is ideal for a data scientist with an interest in promoting awareness of data science, data resources, and data services among EOSS professional and student staff through comprehensive, customized instructional activities and presentations delivered in various formats and modalities.

Essential Duties

  • Creates data visualizations, analytics, and geospatial analyses using various software tools and languages (i.e. Excel, Tableau, Power BI, etc.)
  • Fulfills annual data reports and ad hoc data requests through requirements gathering, identifying appropriate data sources, extracting and preparing data and creating tables, visuals and reports for use by administrators, staff and external stakeholders.
  • Regularly communicates with internal and external data experts, creating custom SQL scrips within ASU’s enterprise data system and and/or manipulating and analyzing research datasets, and identifying and communicating data gaps and key findings to stakeholders.
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of reports, dashboards and presentations.
  • Uses effective project planning techniques to break down projects into tasks and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Works collaboratively with researchers and other data analysts on all aspects of projects, including improving the effectiveness of computational models by using data and feedback from stakeholders.
  • Performs data management functions and maintains databases and related programs to ensure data quality.
  • Plans, develops, and delivers engaging workshops and webinars on various data science topics, tailored to meet the training and capacity-building needs of units across EOSS; Designs and implements onboarding and training programs for Management Interns.
  • Creates and uses various instructional techniques approaches and examples to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of data science concepts, topics, and applications. 
  • Designs, develops, implements, tests, and documents research projects about statistics, machine learning, data analysis, automated classification, and various modeling techniques for shared use and reference by the team.
  • Provides individual and or group consultations with stakeholders on data science-related questions, projects, and research efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Computer Information Systems, Business Information, Economics or a related field and three (3) years of related data analysis experience, OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Math, Statistics, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistics and data science concepts, methodologies, tools, and current trends (i.e. Python, R, SQL SPSS, machine learning, and data visualization).
  • Experience with data visualization software (i.e. Tableau, Power BI) is a plus.
  • Experience in using effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences through a customer service lens, and able to ask appropriate questions to understand context, and explain analyses, analytical reports, or dashboards to stakeholders.
  • Ability to make presentations to faculty, staff, and leadership.
  • Experience coordinating complex projects, and documenting work with project management software (i.e. AirTable, MS Project, JIRA) or code repository platforms (i.e. GitHub) is a plus.
  • Experience hosting and or facilitating workshops, webinars and/or trainings.
  • Experience in a GitHub repository and or publications.
  • Experience with Open Source software a plus.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of information organization and retrieval technologies used to organize, store, and access digital content.
  • Ability to work independently, manage and prioritize tasks and projects simultaneously; inform of emerging trends and technologies in data science; and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
