About the Department
 

The Pearson Lab performs data science and machine learning research for clinical oncology applications. The Pearson Lab is situated in the Section of Hematology/Oncology within the Department of Medicine in the Biological Sciences Division of the University of Chicago.


Job Summary
 

The Data Science Project Manager will participate in computational scientific research projects, including both software manipulation and research logistics in support of multi-modal machine learning based research. They will ensure compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates, including for international data sources. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings and progress reports.

Responsibilities


  • Work closely with members of both University of Chicago teams and external partners to apply quantitative methods to cancer data in order to improve biological understanding and treatment outcomes and identify key lessons and recommendations.  

  • Organize data required to perform computational experiments, including personal health data, digital imaging data, genomics data, and treatment data. This data may be found in unique repositories, the electronic health record, or other repositories.

  • Organize and maintain standard operating procedure documents for lab operations, including using the software platform Notion.

  • Perform data analysis in collaboration with laboratory personnel. 

  • Refine and revise broad research questions into manageable research hypotheses and aims.

  • Conduct reviews of the published and unpublished literature. 

  • Assist as co-author on scientific journal articles, including the development and maintenance of literature databases and utilizing Endnote software.

  • Assist in co-authoring progress reports to update funding providers including government grants, foundations, industrial sponsors, and benefactors.

  • Actively participates in team meetings.

  • Work independently and within teams on both ongoing and nonrecurring projects, ensuring that the project progresses according to specified goals and time parameters. 

  • Assist administrative support staff, including the development and implementation of virtual and in-person conferences as well as tracking and responding to external customer/stakeholder inquiries and requests.

  • Interact with internal and external customers in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Communicate effectively in both a written and oral format with a broad range of individuals within and external to the University of Chicago.

  • Work independently and within teams on special nonrecurring and ongoing projects, ensuring that the project progresses according to specified time parameters associated with the various stages of the project.

  • Complete faxing, filing, deliveries, copying, data entry, and other duties as assigned.

  • Provide coverage for administrative support staff, when needed.

  • Analyzes moderately complex data sets for the purpose of extracting and purposefully using applicable information.

  • Provides professional support to staff or faculty members in defining the project and applying principals of data science in manipulation, statistical applications, programming, analysis and modeling.

  • Performs other related work as needed.



Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
