The Data Protection & Privacy Analyst will be a member of the IT Security Operations team reporting to the Director / Manager, IT Security Operations. Responsibilities include managing alerts and mitigating issues related to sensitive data, access, and compliance. Responding to legal and HR requests for historical data and generating reports for compliance teams.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform daily and long-term operational and strategic management of data privacy systems and reporting as well as compliance related projects
- Assisting with triage, and tracking of data incidents (i.e., instances of loss, theft, or inappropriate disclosure of confidential/personal information)
- Documenting, conducting, and assisting others with investigations of data incidents; collaborating with internal teams to understand root cause, assess impact, and develop remediation plans
- Engage in and manage projects to improve data security and access controls
- Ensure effective management of data compliance systems and that the content contained is accurate
- Provide compliance information and standardized reporting on a scheduled basis together with unscheduled reporting demanded by management
- Gain an understanding of company infrastructure and technologies and ensure compliance and privacy controls are established and effective across all systems.
- Respond to requests for historical data recovery and searches
- Work closely with internal stakeholders to evaluate potential compliance areas to identify gaps and ensure full compliance with data protection & privacy regulations
- Design processes relating to privacy incidents and exceptions and create automated alerts using system tools
- Establish and maintain documentation of procedures, processes, and reports concerning data privacy and governance
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, Competencies
- Strong knowledge of data and compliance regulations including GLBA, Safeguards, CCPA, FERPA, SOX, CIS, and others
- Experience working in data privacy or governance role and responding to data requests, audits, discoveries or incidents
- IT experience using data monitoring, reporting systems including data loss prevention and data compliance and security systems
- Understanding of data security and access configurations of file systems and databases
- Experience with Microsoft discovery tools, G-Suite discovery (Vault) and other discovery systems is beneficial
- Proven ability and experience in executing strategic data privacy and compliance projects and managing incidents and reporting
- Strong ability to carry out assigned tasks independently with little supervision
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to multitask, and attention to detail
- Preferred Higher Education industry knowledge.
Education and Experience: Minimum
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field
- 2+ years working in an IT role
Education and Experience: Preferred
- Data Governance and compliance experience
- Knowledge of compliance regulations including GLBA, CCPA, FTC Safeguards, CIS/NIST controls, FERPA, HIPAA, SOX
- Data privacy certifications are a plus
