Description of Work Unit | Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities. The Police Department is responsible for the public safety and security of our campus and surrounding communities and constituents. The Data Manager & Analyst oversees the collection, storage, and reporting of crime and safety data. CSUPD does not subscribe to any specialized software, so this position is expected to be proficient in personally written and managed ETL processes. |
Position Summary | This position reports directly to the Captain of the Investigations Unit and works closely with the Patrol, Command, Business, and Special Events units. This position also works closely with the Chief of Police, as well as campus partners (SAFE, Transportation Services, Title IX, Housing) and serves on campus-wide committees and task forces where safety data is crucial (Clery Committee, Vision Zero, Transportation Forum, Campus Bicycle Advisory Committee). The Data Manager & Analyst monitors CSUPD’s data needs and uses skills in coding to build and maintain secure relational databases, interactive visualization dashboards, and various scripts. This position extracts, transforms and loads raw data from the county-wide database to build relevant data models and reporting processes. The Data Manager & Analyst presents findings to the Chief of Police, committees, and/or task forces. This position also determines what data must be collected, building/designing input forms, defining input field parameters and collection methods. This position uses analytics and various coding languages/software to draw conclusions based on their findings. This position evaluates data sets to identify trends and patterns, driving department and campus-wide safety decisions and initiatives. Focused attention to detail, as well as the ability to understand abstract concepts, is essential to perform well in this role. This position is also responsible for working in partnership with the University Clery Compliance Program Director to maintain Clery Act compliance measures, ensuring accurate data is recorded and reported properly. This position is also responsible for establishing and performing internal measurements of quality assurance including statistics related to: proactive policing, calls-for-service, patrols, bicycle enforcement, DUI enforcement, time analysis, geographical analysis, and data entry accuracy. |
