As a Data Engineer you will be responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining University data platforms and applications that support the University’s data needs. You will develop and improve architectures that enable data extraction and transformation for analysis including predictive or prescriptive modeling.

As a Data Engineer you will be expected to understand structures and patterns in data and develop innovative solutions. A Data Engineer understands how to optimize data for retrieval and storage. A successful candidate will demonstrate effective communication within the team, share knowledge and mentor peers, and adapt quickly to changing technologies. You must be aware of best practices for securing data, limiting exposure and preventing unauthorized access. You will also be expected to be a self-starter who identifies areas of improvement. This person would be the technical point of contact for a given area of responsibility within the team.

Essential Duties

A Data Engineer in Enterprise Technology executes on defined projects, products, and services to achieve team-level goals by designing, building, and maintaining data solutions with an internal open source, automation-first approach. They will support Data Engineers in their mission to deliver highly available and reliable services to the University.

  • Works primarily within the scope of well-defined workstreams with high level guidance from more senior engineers
  • Effectively collaborates to get work done
  • Supports our software developers, database architects, data analysts and data scientists with data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects.
  • Gathers functional requirements for customers, work with 3rd party vendors and the technology team, plan and build solutions with a cloud first approach, and be the technical point of contact for future issues within their area of responsibility.
  • Builds processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management.
  • This individual will be on SCRUM teams, report progress in daily standups, and escalate blockers.
  • Participates in a 24/7 on-call rotation, weekends and holidays as needed. -- after hours work to cover maintenance windows.
  • Takes shared ownership of the product or service

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Excellent candidates will have experience in at least some of the following:

  • Proactively identify new opportunities and advocates for and implement improvements to the current state of projects, products, and services
  • Practice and motivate others to practice the Enterprise Technology Positive Core, to bring authentic selves every day, and to contribute to building community
  • Model integrity and a high standards of excellence for work; leverage this to set and hold the bar for quality and best practices for teams — e.g. via code and design reviews
  • Experience with IT practices such as: Agile/Scrum, CI/CD, ITIL, peer-reviews, continuous improvement, etc.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets
  • Experience building applications with no-SQL databases
  • Familiarity with relational databases and building complex SQL queries
  • Experience with serverless architectures
  • Familiar with writing tools to interact with APIs
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected dataset
  • Experience with AWS cloud services
  • AWS / Azure / GCP Certifications
  • Terraform experience
  • Ability to model empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
