Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Information Technology Division is hiring a Data Center Support Engineer. Responsibilities include supporting day-to-day operations, maintenance, and management of data center infrastructure. The role involves collaborating with data center staff to ensure compliance with standards, meeting requirements, and maintaining energy efficiency and safety. The position requires problem-solving skills, providing technical guidance to team members, and may involve managing systems in other IT spaces.

 

Responsibilities Include:

Data Center Systems Support and Management (60%):

  • Serve as a technical resource for internal IT inquiries and adapt IT products to the Lab's environment.
  • Develop, maintain, and support in-house applications for IT infrastructure.
  • Explore and integrate new technology products and services.
  • Collaborate with network engineers, cybersecurity engineers, and supervisors to gather requirements and establish APIs for applications.
  • Participate in departmental and cross-functional projects.
  • Troubleshoot issues requiring data analysis from various systems.
  • Respond to staff requests for data validation, data dashboards, or scripts.
  • Collaborate with technicians and network staff to provide cost-effective solutions.

Data Center Maintenance and Operation (30%):

  • Schedule and communicate effectively to ensure timely completion of IT infrastructure requirements.
  • Coordinate repair of HVAC, generator, and alarm systems with vendors or Facilities Maintenance and Operations Group.
  • Assist in maintenance tasks at critical Computing Facilities Group (CFG) sites.
  • Install, relocate, and configure wireless and environmental alarm monitoring devices.
  • Perform cable installations to support CFG system setups.
  • Interact with users or project teams to establish system specifications and resolve issues.
  • Manage and maintain systems for monitoring and managing data center systems.
  • Document physical changes to CFG spaces during infrastructure modifications.
  • Provide training on techniques, practices, procedures, and safety.

Support Power, Cooling, and Physical Security for IT Spaces (10%):

  • Assist in managing power, cooling, and physical security for other IT Division facilities.
  • Document physical changes to CFG spaces during infrastructure modifications.
  • Overall, the role involves a significant focus on supporting and managing data center systems, along with maintenance and operation tasks, and providing support for power, cooling, and physical security for IT spaces.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Attention to detail in documentation and workmanship.
  • Experience with a UNIX command line environment and TCP/IP networking.
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language such as Python, C, C++, Perl, or bash/powershell scripts.
  • Working knowledge of at least one additional programming language.
  • Basic understanding of software development, testing, and deployment theories and frameworks.
  • Ability to provide technical input and direction for small projects.
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with all levels of staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines, maintain documentation, and organize information.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of industry standards and current trends in IT data centers.
  • Experience with networked device configuration and testing, preferably via SNMP.
  • Familiarity with Git version control system.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity practices and protocols.
  • Programming certifications in Python, C, C++, Perl.

 

Salary:

The Data Center Support Engineer position offers an annual salary ranging from $95,172 to $116,340, which fits within the overall salary range of $84,600 to $142,764. The final salary offered will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and alignment with the internal peer group.

  • This is a full-time 1-year term appointment, with the potential for extension or conversion to a career appointment based on job performance, availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
