Data Architect

The Data Architect reports to the Assistant Director for Data and is responsible for development and management of an overall data architecture practice for the University.  The position will work across different technical and business organizations to assess current data pathways and environments and make long term recommendations, roadmaps and plans.  The Data architect will also play and lead technical role in the implementation of those recommendations and associated standards and development. 

The data architect, working with other departments, will also develop data model, data marts, and lead the development of the overall university data domains.  This position will collaborate with internal partners to capture requirements, design, create, document, and manage new solutions associated with organizational data.

The data architect will work with multiple groups inside and outside of IT to ensure that data governance rules are implemented and followed and processes are established, as well as, appropriate controls and security are in place for university data assets.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Architecture Function
    • Manage the data architecture function for the university ensure that data has clear lineage, ownership, and follows established data pathways in moving throughout the organization (e.g. ETL, API, Data Marts, Reporting Tools, etc.)
    • Responsible for assisting in the establishment of a Data Architecture practice, and the adoption of an architecture and standards methodology.
    • Communicates the architecture to the stakeholders and collaborates and coordinates with existing domain architects in the formalization and adoption of IT standards and procedures.
    • Champions a structured approach to business application, integration, & data solutions.
    • Directly assists in the development of a solutions architecture program including departmental roadmaps and project portfolios for IT systems architecture.
    • Influences changes to standards when necessary.
    • Manages and ensures that the enterprise data architecture is developed to support current data demands and is flexible to meet future strategic growth and changes.
    • Assists domain architecture team on solutions management and timing of financial spend for application solutions.
    • Coordinates new data developments to ensure consistency with existing warehouse structure.
    • Reviews business context for solutions to company challenges as well as defining the vision and requirements for the solution, recommending potential options, (which may include RFIs, RFPs or prototype development), selecting the most optimal option, and the development of a roadmap for the selected solution.
  • Data Environment & Model Development
    • Develops cloud databases, data marts, and data warehouse environments to support data collection and data mining necessary for analytics and reporting. 
    • Develops data modeling and is responsible for data acquisition, access analysis, archive, recovery, load design and implementation.
    • Collaborates with internal customers to capture requirements, design, create, document, manage and fulfill requests for on-going and/or ad-hoc reports, dashboards, and scorecards.
    • Self manages projects, tasks and timelines ensuring that approvals from leadership are obtained.
    • Assists in identification of data integrity problems and recommends solutions.
  • Data Governance and Security Integration
    • Partners with the University Analytics and Institutional Research office on the implementation, deployment, and management of the data governance processes and structures across the organization.
    • Partner with the CISO organization to ensure appropriate controls and security structures are in place to protect various types of data.
    • Ensure that compliance rules are followed for different data classifications (e.g. Students, Patient, Employee, etc.)
  • Project Integration & Governance
    • Supports the architectural aspects of all application projects in peer IT portfolios.
    • Directs the identification and recommendation of appropriate solutions, upgrades, replacements, or decommissioning options incorporating business and technology productivity, usability, and total cost of ownership.
    • Develops and executes solutions which further reduce the percentage of time spent on reactive work.
    • Assures solutions not only are a fit for the specific purpose but also closely align with the standards guidelines of technology solutions.
    • Manages activities that take place during solution ideation, solution design, and solution implementation.
  • Data Governance and Security Integration
    • Provides analysis of security protection technologies as necessary.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or similar relevant field is required; a master's degree or higher in a relevant field or comparable professional experience is strongly preferred;
  • 5+ years of experience in a broad data environment as a Data Engineering, Data Designer, Database Administrator with substantive work with the development and management of enterprise systems, data warehouses, data integration platforms, and custom developed solutions;
  • 3+ years of experience in designing and developing performance measurement both on premise and cloud data marts and automated reporting systems.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills; ability to interface and coordinate efficiently and effectively with various colleges, departments, community stakeholders, vendors, and external partners.
