• Experience working with relational database tools such as SQL, or conducting data analysis with a statistical package (Stata, R, SPSS, etc.)
• Degree in discipline which emphasized quantitative skills (e.g. business analytics, statistics, social sciences, economics, educational leadership)
 • Experience working within an administrative unit in higher education
• Master's degree


Job Description:

The Office of Enrollment Research and Analytics (ERA) and the Office of Institutional Research (IR) are seeking two full time Data Analyst positions to provide data analysis and research for institutional leaders, decision makers, and the general public. Successful candidates may have an appointment with ERA or a split appointment with ERA and IR. The positions will be a two year term with the possibility for renewal.

These offices foster an institutional culture of data-informed planning, decision making, and reporting, by collecting, analyzing, interpreting, transforming, and disseminating accurate, high quality, timely information. Duties for the Data Analyst position include creating reports and conducting analysis using a variety of data sources and tools (e.g. Cognos 11, MS Excel, Tableau, SPSS, Stata, etc.); compiling institutional data for internal and external reports and data submissions including to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, Common Data Set, and AAU Data Exchange; maintaining and creating new data visualizations and reports for administrators and the university community utilizing Cognos 11; preparing reports and analysis of institutional data and survey results; providing support in compiling, managing and analyzing data to inform University policy discussions; and responding to ad hoc requests from constituents across campus.

The successful candidate will be a professional with a commitment to and understanding of the academic mission, possess critical thinking skills to ensure consistency and accuracy of methods employed, attention to detail, and possess the ability to explain data to multiple audiences with differing levels of understanding. This position will have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and must have the capacity to work well in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment. Must be self-motivated and exhibit patience in supporting the identification, resolution and documentation of process issues.


Example of Duties
• Gathers operational data to examine past organization performance.
• Assist in the preparation, cleansing, and verification of data.
• Perform basic data manipulation and analysis techniques.
• Develops and analyzes organizational data to quantify the competitive performance of business segments, evaluate potential operational changes, and design new approaches and methodologies.
• Applies and integrates statistical, mathematical, predictive modeling and business analysis skills to manage and manipulate high volume data from a variety of sources.
• Recommends actions for future developments & strategic business opportunities, as well as enhancements to operational policies.
• May be involved in exploratory data analysis, confirmatory data analysis and/or qualitative analysis.
Level Guidelines
• Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision
• Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode
• Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope
• Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained
• Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate
• May lead projects of limited scope and complexity
• May provide guidance to students
