By integrating world-class scholarship from across the University with the perspectives of nationally prominent practitioners, the Center analyzes and makes recommendations that will shape public deliberations and improve the fairness of our legal system.
Reporting to the Project Manager, the Data Analyst Consultant will work directly with grantees under the Upholding the Rule of Law/Wrongful Conviction Review program funded by the Bureau of Justice Administration. This grant program supports wrongful conviction entities providing high-quality and efficient post-conviction representation for defendants in post-conviction claims of innocence. Grantees include innocence organizations and prosecutor's offices engaged in post-conviction investigation and litigation of actual innocence claims. The Data Analyst Consultant will work directly with grantees to help them develop or improve their data collection and analysis efforts and play a crucial role in supporting innocence projects, contributing to evidence-based strategies, and working towards the goal of ensuring justice for the wrongfully convicted.
Job Description
Direct Grantee Consultation

  • Collaborate with innocence organizations or conviction integrity units to understand their unique data needs and challenges, facilitating the development of tailored solutions that support their efforts in identifying and rectifying wrongful convictions.
  • Design and implement data collection processes to gather relevant information related to applicants and wrongful convictions generally.
  • Clean, validate, and analyze large datasets to identify patterns, trends, and potential areas for further investigation.
  • Design and develop interactive data visualizations and dashboards to communicate actionable insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Utilize statistical models and machine learning to analyze case data, uncover wrongful convictions, and support innocence projects in justice reform efforts.
  • Collaborate with legal and investigative teams to integrate data analysis into case strategies.
  • Stay informed about advancements in data analysis techniques, tools, and technologies relevant to criminal justice and innocence projects.

Internal Strategy and Support
  • Assist Project Manager in working directly with grantees and prosecutor offices seeking to improve the functioning of existing conviction review units.
  • Develop, fine-tune, or train Large Language Models (LLMs) to identify potential wrongful convictions from new case files, supporting the continuous improvement and effectiveness of conviction review processes.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field. Specific skills include:
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL), data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI), and Large Language Models (LLMs); familiarity with commercial platforms (Clio, Airtable) helpful.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, understandable insights for general audiences.
  • Proactive with the ability to work both independently and as an effective collaborator within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to travel as required by project demands
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with government agencies and/or public organizations to conduct research or to implement change
  • Proven experience as a Data Analyst in legal or criminal justice contexts, with knowledge or interest in criminal justice, innocence projects, or legal analytics, is a plus.
  • Solid strategic and administrative skills and the ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate staff, faculty, and volunteers to achieve research goals in timely and cost-effective fashion;
