Data Analysis Ecologist
Research Support Specialist I
Band E - Exempt
Department of Biological Environmental Engineering
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Albany, New York
Who We Are
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented identities to apply.
CALS is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.
The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) is one of the largest of its kind in the country, with a very diverse faculty, staff, and student population. The department serves three integrated functions: teaching undergraduate and graduate students, researching problems in biology and the environment, and public outreach to help society implement new knowledge.
This position represents a partnership between the New York State Water Resources Institute (NYSWRI) and the Bureau of Ecosystem Health (BEH) within the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW). The BEH safeguards New York’s fish and wildlife resources through the protection of environmental quality pursuant to the NYSDEC mission to conserve, improve, and protect New York's natural resources.
What You Will Do
As the Data Analysis Ecologist, you will participate in project design, data management, and data analysis that may result in co-authoring scientific reports and papers. What We Need
We are looking for a talented individual who builds and maintains effective relationships with multiple stakeholders. We need someone interested in conducting reviews of quality assurance plans that will lead to the monitoring of contaminants in fish. Additionally, we need someone who has the following:
Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of professional experience in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., biology, biochemistry, chemistry, ecology, environmental chemistry, public health), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
Training in, or demonstrated practical knowledge of, statistical analysis.
Proven experience in communicating effectively, both written and oral.
Strong writing skills, including the ability to create and maintain documentation.

Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.
Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:
Master’s degree in the appropriate field and 1+ year of professional experience
Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and procedures.
Experience conducting audits of laboratory and field practices.
Proficiency in R or analogous programming language.
Knowledge of chemical characteristics and standard methods for analyzing biological tissue for contaminants for quality review.
Experience with data management, including relational databases (e.g., Microsoft Access).
The Data Analysis Ecologist will work throughout the state, be housed at the DEC office in Albany, New York, and work alongside DEC staff. BEH will work closely with NYSWRI to provide guidance, oversight, and support.
This is a one-year (40 hours/week) appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
