Job Summary

The Cyclotron Engineer will be responsible for the routine operation of the General Electric (GE) PET Cyclotron in the UCSF Radiopharmaceutical Facility in a manner necessary for the bulk production of radiopharmaceuticals according to internal customer needs. 

The engineer must not only have the ability to work alone with minimal supervision and be a self-motivated individual with excellent troubleshooting skills, but must also participate and perform effectively in a team environment and interact with multiple departments. 

Routine operation is scheduled start-ups, and shutdowns of cyclotron machinery and its associated systems. 

The engineer will be required to pass written tests in radioactive safety, DOT transport regulations, and lab safety requirements.

The Cyclotron Engineer will be responsible for:

  • first-line troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of the cyclotron and its associated systems (vacuum, RF, magnet, etc.) and reporting abnormal operations to the Radiopharmaceutical Facility Manager
  • coordination of second-tier maintenance with GE via telephone and electronic mail
  • coordination of on-site maintenance with GE
  • coordination, planning, site preparation, and parts ordering for planned maintenance period(s)
  • maintaining a spare parts inventory
  • assist manufacturing staff with radiopharmaceutical production and Quality Control
  • perform batch record calculations and maintain documentation according to Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) guidelines
  • following detailed instructions and communicating effectively, both written and verbally
  • prepare documentation and prepare packaging for transport of radiopharmaceuticals to other UCSF locations in accordance with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • training of other UCSF personnel, as necessary
  • coordinating manufacturing inventory with Radiopharmaceutical Facility Manager
  • prepare and submit monthly isotope reports to UCSF Environmental Health and Safety

Investigates incidents, with a focus on cyclotron operation. Performs equipment installation, maintenance, repair and technical support projects autonomously from start to completion in functional area across the medical center and / or health system.


Department Description

The Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine at UCSF. Its mission is research (basic and clinical), teaching, patient care and public service. The Department has 32 sections and research units, 132 full-time faculty, 45 other academic (research) appointees, 34 fellows, 51 residents, 40 post docs, and 16 graduate students across six sites: Parnassus, SFGH, VA Medical Center, Mt. Zion, China Basin Landing, and Mission Bay (QB3). Many faculty conduct research activities and manage large research staff, including students, fellows, post docs, and staff research associates. Some conduct bench research in wet lab settings; others have dry lab (computer based) research programs or specialize in clinical research. The Radiopharmaceutical Facility is a specialized FDA-registered manufacturing facility that allows clinicians and investigators to have access to locally produced radiopharmaceuticals for clinical research.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering discipline or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience
  • Thorough knowledge of internal policies and external regulations related to radiopharmaceutical industry cyclotron safety regulations and performance standards
  • Strong knowledge of biomedical equipment management, medical device technology, clinical engineering, server / network operations and security
  • Technical skills to maintain and repair biomedical cyclotron and other equipment within the facility
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to address problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process
  • Fosters customer service philosophy throughout the organization
  • Ability to identify customer and supplier needs / expectations and ensures they are met through regular communications and excellent service
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with engineers, equipment technicians, and management in department and facility staff who use the technology
  • Develops trust, contributes skills that compliment others and supports Radiopharmaceutical Facility team efforts
  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical concepts and articulate reasoning behind own opinions. Demonstrates active listening skills to understand varying opinions and receive feedback
  • Ability to manage a project through to completion while performing a wide variety of tasks, adapting to changing priorities, deadlines and directions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area preferred            
  • Cyclotron and/or radiation safety training certification
