What You Will Do

Come and be a part of a fast paced, customer focused Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Team, serving a world-class research and development institution. Los Alamos National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity for a seasoned cybersecurity technical staff member to help us support best-in-class programs using NIST standards. You will play a key role in getting the Laboratory to Ongoing Authorization, implementing a Continuous Monitoring Program, evaluating Cloud products, and performing risk analysis and providing recommendations. The CISO Team, under the direction of the Chief Information Office (CIO) and CISO, orchestrates information security across the Laboratory through governance, risk management, and certification and accreditation of IT systems. Depending on your strengths and experience, you may perform duties related to risk management, technical vulnerability assessment and/or certification and accreditation. As a Cybersecurity Technical Staff member on the CISO team, you will have the opportunity to work and grow in an exciting and challenging group. This position is key in working with the Information Systems Security Manager (ISSM) to administer various solutions and tools that support the laboratory’s cybersecurity environment.

Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer, the Cybersecurity Technical Staff member will:

  • Perform technical vulnerability assessment, certification, and accreditation of IT systems based on a risk management framework (RMF) approach (i.e. NIST 800-53);

  • Contribute to achieving Ongoing Authorization; including developing workflows or analyzing output from continuous monitoring efforts.

  • Conduct risk analysis of IT Systems, information security control evaluation and testing, and the development and implementation of processes and tools to enable the Laboratory’s mission.

  • Analyze tools and products for the technology needed to accomplish the Laboratory’s goals and objectives within policy and requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced technical knowledge of information security practices, cyber threats and vulnerabilities, information security, information assurance, or cyber security and demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge to Cloud Computing, Database Security, or Industrial Control Systems as well as communicate that knowledge to a spectrum of stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability and proven experience in conveying complicated technology and security concepts to stakeholders at multiple levels, assessing security controls, and advising on alternative solutions for accomplishing mission needs while adhering to NIST standards and DOE/NNSA requirements. As a result, good communication, diplomacy and interpersonal skills are required.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to implement new software tools or processes such as the eGRC tool Archer. Demonstrated experience contributing to accreditation packages, Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA), Cloud integration, risk assessments, and providing input and guidance.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Training and certification in information technologies, strategies, and cyber security (CISSP certification preferred) and a Master’s degree in a related technical field.

  • Demonstrated experience with classified and unclassified government networks and working knowledge of LANL’s operations and computer and information security policies, practices, and procedures.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. Employee participation in the Telework Pilot may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
