JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Office of Information Security (OIS) is seeking applications for a Cyber Security Systems Engineer that will work as part of the Consulting and Architecture team. We are a dynamic team working to transform information security at Penn State through secure design and exceptional consulting. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and dynamic IT professional to grow and expand their knowledge into the high demand field of cybersecurity. This is an outward facing customer focused position with regular interaction with stakeholders across various systems both large and small.
The Consulting and Architecture team works broadly with units across the University to offer design and implementation guidance across the following:

  • Secure network and system architecture design.
  • Secure network, OS, and container configurations.
  • Ensure security principles and standards are integrated into requests for purchasing (RFPs).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on working groups and committees.
  • Guide units through the process of hardening systems to meet data classification requirements.
  • Promote a culture of information security leveraging a risk-based approach that is focused on continuous improvement.
  • Provide project specific security consulting across the organization.

The successful candidate is preferred to have:

  • A broad range of IT experience and a passion for working closely with stakeholders to promote and balance security with overall usability.
  • Experience working with cloud computing providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform.
  • A strong understanding of security principles and concepts as well as industry best practices.
  • Experience working with next generation firewall technologies.
  • Network infrastructure design, and experience across multiple platforms including Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Desired skills include:

  • The ability to develop and give presentations to both technical and non-technical users.
  • Ability to manage and advance multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated background working collaboratively with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • The ability to drive consensus.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills with diverse audiences.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.

This position will be filled at a level 2 or level 3, depending upon the successful candidates education and experience. The Cyber Security Systems Engineer Level 2 typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Level 3 position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher or plus five years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. .
