Description
Seasonal Position(s), CWD Technicians (3) – Southcentral Kansas. University Title: Research/Lab Technician Job ID #38332 There are currently 3 available seasonal positions (240 hours max – 6 weeks) located in Southcentral Kansas. These positions are being employed to study Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) prevalence among cervid species in Southcentral Kansas. These positions will work alongside Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) and University of Missouri personnel to gather specimens from hunter harvested and road-killed cervids. This data will be used to estimate CWD prevalence among cervids in the region. Shift Incumbent(s) will work 40 hours per week and pay will be bi-weekly according to the University’s pay schedule. Position will require weekend hours (including both weekends of the Kansas firearms deer season) and may require some overnight travel. Position will run from November 01 to December 14, 2021. End date is nonnegotiable.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Must be physically fit and be able to perform a variety of demanding tasks in a variety of outdoor settings and weather conditions. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Required to be at least 18 years of age, US citizen or permanent resident, and possess a valid driver’s license. Must possess a vehicle capable of transportation between various job sites (mileage reimbursement available) and a cell phone to use for project related communication. Preference will be given to students who are working towards a degree in wildlife biology/natural resources or a related area. Should be comfortable handling animal carcasses, blood, and tissues. Must be able to work independently and interact well with members of the public, cooperators, and KDWP/University of Missouri staff. Preferred Qualifications The incumbents will be expected to have a background in wildlife biology, some experience on how to collect and handle biological specimens, read aerial maps, handheld devices, and legal descriptions. Training will be provided on how to collect and handle biological specimen upon hire, but prior experience is preferable. The incumbents will have frequent contact with deer hunters, taxidermists, and other project cooperators. Incumbents will be expected to familiarize themselves with CWD in Kansas and may be required to answer questions or demonstrate lymph node collection in response to hunter inquiry. Incumbents will be expected to work with animal carcasses, blood, tissues, and instruments/preservatives required for sample collection.
