Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 32-40 hours per week) Custodian position for the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University (OSU). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately one (1) year from the begin date with the potential for extension. This position is located in Blue River, Oregon at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest.
This position supports the maintenance and operations of the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) headquarters site near Blue River, Oregon. The HJA is an important research and education site for Oregon State University and the US Forest Service, including the Andrews Long-term Ecological Research Program. The custodian/office assistant performs custodial duties for all buildings and grounds at the Andrews headquarters and assists with front office duties.

Key Responsibilities
60% – Custodial Responsibilities at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest Headquarters:
This position has primary responsibility for maintaining apartments, offices, conference facilities and grounds of the Andrews Experimental Forest headquarters in a clean, safe and attractive condition. The offices and labs will be serviced on daily, weekly, monthly and yearly schedules appropriate to each space and task. Conference, classroom and residences will have regular service schedules for checks and major cleaning, but will also require cleaning after every use. Users of the apartments perform basic cleaning prior to checkout, but spot checks are required before and after each stay, and all facilities must be cleaned routinely regardless of user behavior.
General Cleaning of all buildings at the Andrews Forest Headquarters. Specific schedules and task lists will be developed for each type of building. Although not all-encompassing, the following list gives an indication of the general cleaning tasks: dusts, sweeps, mops, strips, waxes and buffs floors; cleans walls and other surfaces; cleans mirrors; cleans and sanitizes toilets, sinks and showers; fills dispensers; vacuums area rugs and mats as needed; picks up litter; shovels snow; sweeps steps, including apartment building steps in between user groups; washes windows, including outside windows; empties ash trays and wastebaskets; collects and bundles recyclable items.
Linen Maintenance: Responsible for stocking, counting, washing, folding, and organizing all bedding and towels available for checkout to users of the Andrews forest residences. This also includes regular washing and organizing of bed protectors, bath mats and cleaning fabrics that are routinely provided in apartments.
Repairs: This position is not responsible for major repairs, but is required to perform minor repairs related to custodial duties.
Responsibilities include: changing light bulbs in all buildings, clearing clogged drains and toilets, performing minor maintenance of custodial equipment and building (i.e. changes belts or bags on vacuum cleaners, changes brushes and pads on floor buffers and waxers). Larger maintenance or safety issues must be reported to the Site Manager and the Maintenance Supervisor.
Security: Responsible for routine checks to ensure buildings at the Andrews Forest are secured during non-business hours. Also responsible for ensuring lights are turned out, heat is turned down and rodent problems are handled proactively during these routine checks.
Supplies: Responsible for stocking cleaning carts, apartments, bathrooms, kitchens and custodial closets with appropriate supplies, including labels that are consistent with OSHA regulations. When new supplies are needed, requests are made to the Site Manager. The custodian may requisition supplies, following all requirements and rules regarding suppliers and environmentally sensitive alternatives.
Miscellaneous: Responsible for moving and arranging furniture for various conferences, classes and other special functions; may coordinate the work of students or other helpers; assisting Maintenance Supervisor with grounds keeping, landscaping and other tasks. Specific daily, weekly, monthly and yearly lists and schedules of custodial duties will be followed and updated as needed under direction of the Site Manager and Forest Director.
40% – Office Assistant:

Responsible for greeting visitors and researchers, handling phone calls and distributing or responding to mail (both postal and email), collecting/mailing Andrews Forest mail at nearest post office; assisting with maintenance of office computer records, and helping to process reservations for 9 apartments (70 beds) and other conference facilities. Other duties include: ordering, sales and tracking of Andrews memorabilia; helping to organize events at the Andrews Forest; making signs and labels; maintaining displays and photo-boards; restocking paper and office supplies; note-taking; maintaining vending machine; helping research and order office and other supplies; maintaining lists of library books, and entering publications into spreadsheet or document. Specific lists of daily, weekly and yearly office assistant tasks will be established and updated under direction of Site Manager and Forest Director.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Basic familiarity with computers and common programs, such as Word and Excel.
  • Previous experience with Office Assistant duties.
  • At least one year of custodial experience at a facility of similar size to the Andrews Forest Headquarters.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position is based at a remote field station in the Western Cascades, 6 miles from the nearest town of Blue River, OR, and 50 miles from the nearest city. The nearest public bus stop is four miles from the station; the employee will be solely responsible for daily transportation to and from the site. The work schedule may vary depending on demand and may include occasional work on weekends when essential to prepare for a large group but will not exceed 40 hours in any week. In general, the employee will work during business hours Monday through Friday, with some scheduling flexibility.
