Job Summary
  • Eastern Washington University is seeking a self-motivated, independent worker for a Custodian 3-Float Schedule. Positions at this level lead and/or supervise assigned personnel performing various custodial and housekeeping duties. This position regularly assigns, instructs and checks the work of others, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on frequent basis and carry up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis. Successful candidate must be able to pass a pre-placement physical.
  • This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. Required Qualifications
  • One to two years’ experience in housekeeping, janitorial, general or building maintenance, or custodial work
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Physical ability to do the job.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have prior cleaning or custodial experience.
  • Must be able to work different shifts and days.
  • Must be able to read, write and understand written documents.
  • Must have basic Microsoft Office experience including Word, Excel, and experience using an email system.
  • Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Lead or Supervisory Experience
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operation of various custodial equipment.

    Responsibility / Duty
    • Process recycling.
    • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms and fixtures that are in said facilities in accordance with established practices and procedures.
    • Clean, dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty wastebaskets and trash containers; empty and clean ashtrays and cigarette urns; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
    • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
    • Strip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
    • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washer, high speed buffers and vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
    • Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments.
    • Lock and unlock assigned buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows; report any unauthorized occupants; turn out lights.
    • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies (mix only as directed).
    • May perform cleaning and related activities in areas within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment (activities such as removing snow or debris, sweeping sidewalks or stairs).
    • May perform maid services in housing if required.
    • May assist in other areas when necessary.
    • May move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.

    • Will lead and assign work schedules to custodial staff within the facilities.
    • Will train new full time and part time employees in proper cleaning techniques.
    • Will make routine checks to determine if work is being properly performed.
    • Will complete area inspections on monthly bases.
    • Will assist in maintaining inventory of custodial supplies and equipment.
    • Assist with employee records and evaluations.
    • Work and communicate closely with building occupants within your areas to be sure you meet their needs.
    • May work with scheduling office to assure information is correct.
    • Attend to emergencies when necessary.
    • Perform related duties as required.
    • Attend safety meetings and other related meetings.
    • Take classes when necessary such as: training in First Aid, CPR, new products, human relationships, and leadership skills.

    • Have weekly meetings with custodial staff with some training and exchange of ideas.
    • Call in work orders.
    • Will keep supervisor apprised of any performance issues in their areas.
    • Have essential physical and mental capacities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions; verbal and written, have basic comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, mathematical, organizing and innovative skills.
