The mission of Facilities Management is to enable the institute to carry out its mission of teaching, research and advisory service by providing cost effective and efficient planning, design, construction, maintenance, safety, and security services throughout the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Position Summary
The Custodial Worker maintains the upkeep and cleanliness of campus buildings to ensure a clean environment is maintained for all faculty, staff, students and visitors.
Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, wax, buff, shampoo and clean steps and landings.
  • Work safely with equipment and chemicals. Keep equipment serviced and clean.
  • Check, restock and maintain supply closets. Ensure supplies are adequate and available on a daily basis.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position is non-exempt, eligible to receive overtime hours working in week beyond 40 hours, in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and university policy.
  • This position may work a non-traditional schedule, occasionally working weekends and holidays
  • Position is also subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies
  • This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the Institute is officially closed
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license during employment
  • Must comply with the University Vehicle Use Policy and complete the Drivers Authorization form through the Office of Risk Management
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs; tolerate frequent bending, stooping, and climbing stairs
  • Ability to work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.

Required Qualifications
LICENSE:
  • Valid driver’s license

COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of general custodial and/or housekeeping practices.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to get along with others.
  • The ability to operate powered and non-powered cleaning equipment. Must be willing and able to learn the use of heavy floor care equipment.
  • The ability to work with and properly use or learn to use cleaning chemicals and agents, including dilution and dispensing systems.
  • Personal protective equipment will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department.
  • The ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs and tolerate frequent bending, stooping and climbing stairs.
  • The ability to work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.
Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • High School Graduate or equivalent.

COMPETENCIES / EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience in custodial practices to include dry and wet mopping, stripping, burnishing, buffing floors and shampooing of carpeting, as well as sanitizing restrooms and replenishing supplies.
  • Demonstrated experience working as custodian.
  • Experience in commercial cleaning.
